I just checked the codes on my truck (with the key) and it came up with code P1693. I looked on the code list in the 24 valve FAQ forum and it said:

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in Companion Module A fault has been generated in the companion engine

control module.

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTC

Detected in ECM

A 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM.

What does this mean? Do I need to repair anything. The truck is running great. The truck is an '02 2500, with a six speed, no mods. Thanks for the help.

You need to get the codes pulled. I did this once and I also got the code for the APPS. One thing that the key cycling did not show was two death codes for the VP44. Autozone will pull the codes for free and I can tell you that when they did mine the codes for the failing VP44 did not show only the APPS codes did. I finally bit the bullet and took it to the dealer to have the codes pulled. Check to seeif there is a member close to you with the same year model that has a smarty they can pull them for you or someone with a scanner.

yes, you need to get the codes checked in the ecm. you could go to autozone or most parts stores like them. they will usually check the codes free.

I just got back from autozone and they picked up two codes. Both of the codes their reader picked up were P0216.

P0216 (M) Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible

wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway.

Any thoughts on what this means, is my VP44 on it's way out? The truck only has 50k miles on it.

The P0216 tells me that the VP44 is not long for this world. The injection pump on my model year 2000 Ram died with the P0216.

What is the inservice date for the truck?

my 2000 had been through a couple of pumps. it has 128k on it right now. I am going to be putting my second pump on it soon. it had already been replaced at least once when I got the truck.

I hope you slide in under the wire with a 2002 model year truck. always better to get a free pump then have to pay for one. I didnt know how bad the 216 code was when I got my truck and it was still under warranty. my truck went out of warranty in november of 2004. its inservice date was november of 1999. that always sucks.

Your 2000 must have had a different warranty than my 2000 (delivered 2 October 1999). DaimlerChrysler warranted my VP44 when it failed 24 July 2006. It took a bit of persuasion but D/C eventually honored my warranty. The details are in the first post in this thread.

The VP44 in JDriscoll's 2002 Cummins/Ram with 50,000 miles is almost certainly under warranty.

wish I had known about that thread Thomas. but this was before then. I had never actually read my warranty manual. even if I did I probably wouldnt have caught that loophole. :{

I said loophole because you have to fight to get it. if it were easy I wouldnt have worded it that way. I am not that great with words. lol.

I lost my injection pump a few months ago, and mine is WAY out of warranty. I called Dodge, and asked if there was anything that they could do to help me with the $2200. 00 charge the dealer was going to charge to fix the problem (we were traveling w/ family in the RV, down in San Diego). The cost of a new rebuilt pump is 1200. 00 or so, if you look around, not including installation. Dodge ended up offering to cover 50% of the dealer charge, so I ended up paying a little over $1100. 00 at the dealer. It is worth the couple of hours on the phone to Dodge (PS. I didn't even have to yell or cuss, Dodge just kept saying "hold - On") Good luck!

136,460, and man when it died, it dropped dead, and stuck me in the middle of the 8 & the 15 interchange, pulling a 5th wheel. I could barely coast over to the side of the road. No warning at all. My truck is a 2000, in service in Nov of 1999. Also at about 94, 000 miles, the dealer replace the lift pump (just out of warranty), and that was the first time I called Dodge, and they charged my $25. 00 to replace the lift pump.

It looks to me like you were barely, rather than WAY, out of warranty. Read the link in the 7th post in this thread for a different take on the warranty. It may help out on your 2001. Mine died at 130,737 miles and was replaced under warranty.

I know the 8/15 interchange - not a good place to get stuck with a 5th wheel. You were fortunate to coast to the side. Mine died a few counties north of there, pulling onto the 101. It was just as though I had turned off the key. Since it died on the onramp, it was an easy coast to safety. Lets hope our rebuilds have the latest/greatest parts.

Well the dealer called today, the VP44 is dead, the good news is the truck is still covered by warranty. The truck will be down for about two weeks. Thanks for all the help guys.

I do not know were Dodge gets their VP44 Overhauled, However, the II and Bluechip Pumps seem to holding up very well. I am sure that the rest of the aftermarket pumps are as good as II's.

Put in a Fuel Pressure gage, and if it gos below 8PSI, install an aftermarket Lift pump kit. Do not run the VP under 6 PSI for long, as it will kill it. When my VP Died, it was as the I'd switched the engine off. It was a seized rotor shaft , the pump had been run for a while with at bad lift pump. I had installed a FP Gage some after buying my truck and she was running low. Moose

This is getting old really quick. The VP44 went out on July 13. The pump was covered by an extended warranty that I purchased at the same time I bought the truck (I won't do that again). The warranty company took forever to authorize the repair, the dealer making the repair called me last Friday, almost a month after the truck broke down, to say that it was finally ready. The truck broke down about 100 mi from where I live, so I had to have a buddy give me a ride to go pick the truck up. Well I made it about halfway back before the truck quite. I was going down the interstate, 70 mph and it just quite. The only code I get when I check it with the ignition is P0463. Any Idea whats wrong now?
