I remember reading a few posts that say to use Amsoil ATF in a NV5600 but can't find anything on it now. Is that right? I put it in my truck about 15000 miles ago and now I'm panicing!

I'd get the cheap gear lube from a local auto parts store ASAP. Pensoil stuff is factory lube. run it a few 100 miles and flush the transmission out again (maybe a 2nd time). Refill with Amsoil syncro mesh if you like your amsoil. I found that 1/2 bottle of the napa friction modifier works well to smooth things out

If you transmission is aluminum, ATF, other wise, normal gear oil is what you need.

What I'm worrying about is if I did any damage or not. I just put it in a buddy's truck this weekend too and he thought it was weird. That's why I started double checking.

As noted, ATF is NOT the correct fluid for the cast iron NV5600... it uses synchromesh. The later aluminum-bodied G56 uses ATF. How well does it shift with the ATF??

As noted, I would get it out of there ASAP... NV5600s are very expensive to rebuild and parts are becoming more and more difficult to find. I would drain some into a glass container (somewhere in the middle of the drain) and see if it has anything odd suspended in the fluid (it should look metallic flaked with brass if the synchronizers wore)... personally, I'd have a UOA done.

The correct fluids are Pennzoil Synchromesh, Amsoil MTF, Redline MTL, or Royal Purple Synchromax... there are a few others, but these are the most common.

It actually shifted better than the factory fluid. That's why I thought nothing of it. I'm kinda PO'd that I got wrong info on this site. I guess I really have to be careful what kind of advice I take.

I'll be draining it today. I'm going to put syncromesh in for a short time to hopefully flush everything out. Then replace that w/Amsoil MTF.

Does anyone think I did damage to my trans? I'm hoping that if the G56 uses it, it didn't really hurt things.

As far damage, who knows. AS said earlier, take a sample.

Infact, see if you can get an oil analyst kit and have it checked, explain on the card what happened and see if any abnormal amount of metal is in there. (catch fluid in a clean jar, keep sealed until kit arrives, ensure the oil company know this fact as well).

Flushing is a good idea.

The confusion that you got most likely lies in people not realizing that 05 was a transition year for the transmission (05. 5 have the g56, check your build date, I'm perty sure they didn't mix as stock was available), and whom you spoke with was wrong. It happens.

We aren't paid to be experts here, so leeway and finding an addition source/thread is always a good idea.

I called Amsoil today. I explained what happened. They said that because I don't tow very often, and when I do it's fairly light that I most likely didn't really harm anything. They said that my trans just ran a little hotter than it would with the MTF.

Anyway, I drained the ATF out today. Came out as clear as it is in the bottle. Didn't appear to have any noticeable metal in it. I guess I'll never know until I get down the road a piece.

I just put generic gear oil in for a day or two just to flush it out. Shifts like junk with that stuff in it.

If your NV5600 shifts better with ATF, then I would suggest using Royal Purple syncromax as it is the thinnest of the synchromesh fluids...

Of the three, Royal Purple is the thinnest, Redline MTL is the thickest, and Amsoil falls somewhere in the middle. I found my particular NV5600 likes a thicker fluid... the Redline worked the best for me. However, based on your results, your NV5600 might like a thinner fluid...

Just a thought...
