I just returned from a 4200 mile trip and had two rear clearance lights fail on the top rear of a 04 Newmar 5th wheel. When I removed the lense there was nothing but charred ashes/remains inside, no evidence of a bulb. It got so hot that the lense is distorted and ruined. The lights have the little push in bulbs. Looks like potential for trailer fire? Anyone had problems with these lights? bg.

Was there any evidence of water in the lens? If your housings aren't a higher quality that use a rubber O-ring between the housing base and lens, its possible to have water collect inside. When the water splashes onto a hot bulb they easily burst... ... I know this doesnt explain the melted lens though. Check for correct bulb size, sounds as if you are using #194?

You are right about the water, I opened the last light to fail and two more today and all had water in them. All had a crown of sealant over the top side and also they have the foam rubber gaskets? I was wrong about the bulb, the lights have two LED's in each. I called the dealer where I got the trailer and he said he had not heard of any failures? (does that sound familiar?) I am going to replace all five of the lights on the rear and also the two on the front. Don't need a fire following me down the highway. bg

Do yourself a favor and replace all your lights with the 14 LED light from www.ledtrailerlights.com

go to the clearance light section. scroll down a bit til you see a lense about the shape of the stock light. . thse are perfect replacements and are sealed and are bright. there are 6 LED on each bulb angled. . 3 forward, 3 rearward an the rest clustered. Look in my old readers rigs folder in the raptor folder to se a pic. there are other pics on the light site that show them lit.

That sounds like poor workmanship on installing the marker lights. That's very surprising for a fairly new Newmar, which are known for making a good quality 5er.

Grizzly, you are probably right about the installation. I have been in contact with the light manufacturer and the lights are guranteed for ten year. I pulled the two bad ones and sent tham in for analysis yesterday. bg
