Sorry for the stupid question in advance but I just got my Smarty... Can I run timing settings on the Smarty (EX. 9), if I simply turn off the Comp Box and nothing else? Also what is a good setting for towing with Drag comp & smarty... thanks guys!

Buddy

You can run timing programs as long as the comp is off. While towing... . I always turn the comp off & run SW3 only... . works great for me.

Thanks 724, I just wanted to make sure I was not adding double timing! I'll try SW3 for towing also. We basically have the same setup, what size are your injectors? How do you like the HTT 62ss, do you have the 71 drive wheel? What are your EGT's? I just got my 62ss and still playing with it to tune in Comp/Smarty. . etc. Also only able to get 36psi I would like to bump it to 40spi, so I'm calling HTT to see what they suggest!

Sorry for all the questions! Just curious.....

back when I had a Comp I would run it on level 1 sublevel 2. You can get the timing that way. Also, if you want or need a higher level, you don't have to worry about too much timing.

I've settled on SW #3 for towing with my F1 Mach 1. 6 injectors. Grossing 17K, it's all the power I need. I've tried SWs 5 & 7 while towing, but I can't be smooth enough with the throttle on those settings. Remember, the total HP increase with the Smarty is the same in all softwares above #1. It's just a matter of where in the acceleration curve it gets delivered. For me, towing is all about managing engine load. For that, I need maximum control, not maximum power.

Neil

I run the Smarty on program level 2, and then use the Comp to adjust power and smoke depending upon how the truck is being used - 1x1 empty and around town, and up at 3x3 when towing in the hills - I rarely need more than that...

I have towed with SW2, 3x3..... also tows very nice, but egts are lower running SW3 only.

My injectors are 4 flows from II. They are 125-150hp injectors & a perfect match for the SS62. I tow 15k# & egts never go over 1200* even on the hottest days, but I keep the rpms above 2000 with a load. I have the first SS62 made with the 71 wheel. I get 50lbs boost & sometimes see 55lbs on a hard run. I pulled a sled at Fayette Fair last week & blew my BD intercooler boot into pieces if that tells you anything. The turbo performs best with a 125hp injector.

I'm sure settings vs EGT will vary, depending upon engine mods - with my setup, SW #2 and 3x3, I can't force EGT above 1200 even in steepest grades when towing - usually stays under 1000...

Thanks for all the info, you guys are great. C. 724 sounds like you got her dailed in good, even with the hose pinched I can only muster 35psi ... hum... so I called Dave at HTT and we had a good talk, told him my issue and told him also my turbo will bark even when it shifts gears... he explained that I have too much drive pressure and not enough boost! So to dail it in right I will install another boost gauge in the manifold to monitor drive wheel pressure along with my boost and tune the truck until I can get them fairly close. Also I have a set of 155hp BD's on the shelf that was too much for my S300 charger but might swap them back in with the 62ss... what do you think?

Interesting, sorry to be off topic. I had never heard that. From my study of compressor charts I had assumed that bark was caused by being to the left of the surge line.

IE:Too much boost @ too low engine RPM.

I do not know, just going by what I was told. I'm sure someone will chime in and set it straight. . lol... .

When I'm towing, and in the hills under load at relatively high boost and using cruise control, I'll sometimes click the OD off and get a pretty good "bark" as the engine load is removed and PSI is still pretty high - much as accelerating hard and going thru the gears might. ;)
