just bought a new XD-45!!!

putting up a basketball pole that i would like to double as an engine hoist should the need arise ...



i'm using 6" pipe with 1/4" wall ...



i've welded it at a 90 ...



pole will be cemented in the ground 38" (bottom 3" of hole are solid sandstone#@$%!)



pole will be 10' high and 6' out ...



i plan on welding on a clevis at 5' and using it as an anchor for a come along to pull motors ...



cummins will be the biggest engine ...



will the 6" pipe handle it or do i need to brace it at the 90?

They are not just for hanging WV deer on you know.

So are you going to mount a pulley at the end of the 6' pipe... then pull from the clevis up thru the pulley and down to the engine? Is that the plan?

If so I would get a 10' 4x4 (or something along those lines) and use it to brace near the end of the 6' pole when you lift the engine. This will prevent bending and also give some side to side support to help prevent swinging.



Of course you can use the rear of your truck or something like that as a test load and see how the pole reacts.
 
Weld the brace on! You will be upset when the weld breaks ( not saying you are a bad welder, stuff happens ;) ) and the pole goes thru your windshield! #@$%!
 
Put a 45 degree brace out around the 3' mark and it should be all right. By using the 6" it gives you a lot of strength.

pretty much what i was thinkin' ...



machinist freind called and has some 4" x 3/8" I beam ...



now if i can just get HIM to cut and scallop the ends so they fit the curve of the pipe just right:-laf
 
not sure about the Ibeam as it may kink the 6" . I would put a peice of the tubing halved between like a plate to spread the load. also thats quite a lever and the soil around the base may not hold. the actual lifting point should also be wrapped around or U-bolted to to over head pipe to prevent the backet from tearing out and dropping the motor on your hands or truck. our engines are VERY heavy, be carefull.

I was thinking along similar lines but putting a temp guy wire when pulling the engine. The guy wire would be straight back from the top of the pole to the ground. That is one heck of a lever pulling a 1000 lb engine and of course we are lazy and leave the trans attached for another 300 lbs. :-laf

These loads does not include the sumarrily attached forgotten bolt(s) holding everything still attachted to the vehicle extra loads:{
 
Just call me overkill but here's how I'd do it. The horizontal support under the ground would keep it from tipping side to side and if you put it directly under the lift point you'd be putting the load into the ground right below the lift point. Doing it like this would virtually eliminate soil concerns.
 
if done correctly, you could lift from right at the end in the pic above [where the net is]. . 6" 0. 250" pipe is pretty strong, and you could hang a ton [2k lbs] off the end of the pipe if it is supported properly. . just make sure your welds are good [7018 1/8" on that one would be real good]

wrapping a sling around the pipe and hoisting off that would work well, but having a welded eyelet will work well too if your welds are good
 
good ideas all ...



used 7018 ac 1/8" new dry rods ...



bought a 20k lb weld on clevis ...



cut pieces of the pipe and placed it under the I beam ...



I beam is 6' on long side ... clevis is about 3" out beyond that



pipe is cemented 42" in the ground with the bottom 2 inches cut into solid sandstone ...



now all i need to do is save money to pour a 5 inch thick pad around the base ... (40'x20' should make a nice parking place) for now it will just be used for basketball ... 14 year old daughter will be on the highschool basketball this year
