Another problem today. When the exhaust brake is engaged and I am going down a steep grade with a loaded trailer I now hear a loud whistle. This just started today. Has any one else had this happen??

I had the same thing for a while and found a loose exhaust manafold bolt on my '99 ISB. Installed locks on the bolt and never got loose again. I had the BD X-monitor showing exhaust man. pressure. It would go to 65# allowing exhaust to leak if any loose connections existed ahead of the BD brake.

My truck has 350 miles on it now and just started to do the same thing. At first it just had a normal exhaust brake sound,but now has a loud turbo type whistle to it. It actually sounds more like a brake pad wear sensor on a rotor. It has not affected the performance of the exhaust brake.
 
one thing i noticed is when either in tow/haul mode or using the gears, with the exhaust brake on and when the tach gets to about 2200rpms,the exhaust brakes almost starts surging pumping like disengage/reengage really fast, anyone else notice this?
 
Sorry to tell you this guys but you have an exaust leak I have been threw this a few times. Now that Rip fixed it we will see how long it lasts. Randy

Maybe and maybe not, I had my passenger window down and thought I had brake squeal, turned out it was the exhaust brake. Now that I'm aware of the noise I hear it all the time now, kind of like when your tounge finds the new dental work in your mouth and your tounge wont leave it alone

Jason---This happened to me (see "Turbo Failure" thread---7. 29. 07). Chrysler would not give the dealer any satisfaction. Out of complete frustration with Chrysler, the service manager took a turbo out of a new truck on the line, installed it in mine and the problem was solved. The mechanic and the service manager believe the problem was in the actuator, however, at this time there is no way to fix/recalibrate it. Also, the fact that a turbo is $4500+... . no wonder Chrysler didn't step up to bat.



After 3 check engine lights, a power steering pump, a turbo and an a/c compressor---all within 12k miles---and approximately a total of 2 weeks without the truck (because of being in the shop), one can see why I am NOT a fan of these trucks. Chrysler came out with this engine without enough testing. I'll take my old 300k '99 anyday...
 
Not sure if this is what you are hearing or not, but to offer some input...



You will hear the typical turbo whistle when using the exhaust brake, because the turbo is actually spooling up and building pressure.



Mine blows 5-10lbs of pressure with the brake activated depending on engine RPM, the whistle sounds the same as when I'm under power.



Naturally that sound will always be there, but could be something you may not have noticed before.



Only the 6. 7 reacts this way, the 5. 9 with exhaust brakes would not spool the turbo up enough to build pressure. Since the 6. 7 brake is actually closing the veins within the turbo, it naturally spools up as it does it, in turn making it even more effective.
