Left the hot deserts of the Mohave Valley for a stop over in Fresno, CA and then on to Lincoln, NE to work there for a while. stayin at the camp-a-way in Lincoln. wasnt sure if there were any members out that way or not. not sure what to expect. plan on gettin there around the 1st of september. gonna have to do some serious winterizing before the cold hits though!

does anyone know if they salt the roads in the winter time in Nebraska? any advice would be appreciated. thanks in advance!

I am in Lincoln.

They do salt the roads when/if it snows. I can't comment on whether it is worse than other places or not since I haven't lived in the other places.

What kind of advice are you wanting?

Cheer for the Huskers it will help you fit in :D

pm me sometime and we can bs or i can help you if you need it.

Ouch!!!

I also drive a beater in the winter, well all the time. I am in Terra haute now and I can honestly say there is less rusty trucks at home than here. Everywhere there is snow there is metal killing salt.

Oh great! i can just picture myself playin bumper cars on my way to work in the snow. thanks for the advice... ill be lookin into a beater car.

Does anyone know how the I-80 from California to Nebraska is? (Hills, road conditions, traffic) thanks for the help so far!

We have been in Grand Island (80 miles west of Lincoln) fulltiming in our fiver since last November. If you need any tips on winterizing your fiver, feel free to drop me a line. If you have time, you are welcome to stop by on your way through and see what we have done.

Safe travels... ... Steve

I-80 isn't a bad trip route. You will have to climb up to Donor Pass but it's gradual from the west. Down the east side is another matter. Shortly after you leave the summit, it bends left and you want to go over the summit at a reduced speed. I see you don't have an exhaust brake. Adjust you brakes before you leave home. I'm not familiar with a '95 but if you can lock out overdrive it would sure help. Just take it slow and easy. Remember, YOU CAN GO DOWN A MOUNTAIN GRADE TOO SLOW ALL THE TIME, YOU ONLY GO DOWN TOO FAST ONCE! Use the brake check areas when available to test your brakes before starting your decent. I've been down it in an 18 wheeler, 18 speed, 80k gross, and no jake brake. Not a lot of fun. Once you get past Donor, you will have up's and down's but nothing too dramatic. Good Luck on your trip.

I'm here in Lincoln as well, I have a heated shop and tools if you need a place to work on your rig. Just PM me if you need anything. They mostly use a salt/sand mix around here. Very rarely do they use liquid de-icer.

you have 6000' -7000' passes in CA at the Donner Pass if you go that way--you'll have one or two in Nevada plus a couple in the 4000'-5000' area---in Utah after SLC you'll climb up to 7000' or so again---been sometime since I went thru WY, but I'm sure you'll hit a couple in the 5000' range, but after that its clear sailing--for the most part coming down the Donner pass is the most dangerous--just watch your speed---it's not a bad drive---pretty boring cuz it all looks the same until you get to the salt flats---then Wy is back to boring, eventhough you may see some antelope---you'll see why the cornhusker state is called that once you driven thru it----AND definitely cheer on the BIG RED(ex-Nebraskan)----good luck... ..... chris

Not a problem. If I can fit a charter bus inside, your 5er should fit. I know how much it sucks working on something outside in the cold so, anything I can do to help just let me know.

Figured i would update, since i have nothing better to do with my time when not driving

Currently in Rawlins, WY where i snapped this pic. parked at a Phillips 66 truck stop to let this storm blow by. (gettin some good headwinds)

So far a pretty good trip. left fresno on the 29th @ 9pm and made it to Donner pass. then on to SLC, stopped at a KOA (kinda weird camping in the middle of the city). the grade climbing out of Salt Lake City is fairly steep and long, had to pull over a mile from the summit to let her cool down( 1400*+ on the egt's and approx. 240* on the temp) other than that been pretty good. avg 55-60 up the hills and 60-62 on the flats. fuel is avg 10. 25 mpg. been stayin out of O/D most of the way.

Lots of Dodge p/u's out here on the road!
