i have 54k on my 04,the oil is changed every 3k miles. is the longevity of my engine being hurt by this oil or should i switch to synthetic. i get a really good deal at the dealer for oil changes that is why it is done there. if i change to synthetic should i go with amsoil.

First need to fill out your sig. so we know what your driving/mods etc. Lots of folks run that oil. Nothing wrong with it. Neighbor got no charge coupons for 100k then for $54. 95 after that. He changed every 7500. My neighbor has used it in his last two and put 150k plus on both and running excellant on trade in. As far as synthetic oils lots of good ones out there as long as they meet specs. You'll find differant answers for the differant brands more of owners preferance.

Your throwing away good oil if you change that often! ANY oil that meets the API spec. CI-4+ and Cummins CES Specs. should last at least 7,500 miles! If you did change to the Amsoil Synthetic, you could go much longer on an Oil change, like up to 25,000/one year, and it does meet the CES 20078

The 20078 denotes Cummins formulation for synthetic oil meeting that standard.

Amsoilman, I have a question. somewhere I have heard that switching from 'natural' oil to synthetic is not a good idea, that it may leak because it is thinner, blah blah blah... must be a wives tail but is there any truth to it?

Well, it is somewhat of a "wives tale". IF your engine is in good mechanical condition, and it has no leaks to begin with, synthetics will not cause a leak! If Synthetics causes leaks, then all vehicles must use synthetics, as every parking lot you go into, has oil spots in the parking spots!



As too Synthetics being "thinner", that is not true either, as ANY oil that meets the viscosity of say a 15W-40, will be basicly the same. To be a 40 grade oil it would have to be between 12. 5 cSt@ 100C. and 16. 3 cSt@ 100C. This is an SAE requirement.

Don't you just love how all the dealers started pushing the 3,000 mile oil change to get the customer in more often. What a marketing scam. I run my Amsoil 15,000 miles and was wondering what you thought about this statement by John Holmes a TDR writer and Carson Dodge service rep. He uses Amsoil in his trucks but said to change it four times a year regardless of milage as any oil will build acids in your engine by time?Most of the time I think he has good info but have to think this goes in line with the fact that he is working for a dealership and playing the change your oil often deal. My buddy has a 92 12 valve that just turned over 850,000 miles and he changes the oil when he feels like it. That engine has never been rebuilt. Just had injectors and pumps replaced. I think we all worry about this oil thing way to much.

The 15w40 amsoil full syn. is designed to go a lot longer then 3 months. Its also rated for marine usage and I bet a lot of those diesels sit a lot not being run in water. I use it in my New Holland tractor which at times sets for weeks on in. Some times that Holmes from the Carson site speaks out of both sides of his mouth trying to keep the manufacture happy with his answers. Hit on him about the AC ISSUES or poor fuel filtering and he'll say they don't see many problems on these trucks end of discussion etc. Chaps my butt.
