the part with the small line running from near the fuel inlet down to it...

i hear 'this part' is for advancing the timing for cold weather starts

what is this part called?

thanks, don

In lay-persons terms, It is a cold start feature. I believe The "KSB" is a German acronym. (Bosch) What it does is, When the engine is cold (relative) the wire going to what looks like a fuel shutoff solenoid is energized. This allows for case pressure to flow though the KSP and to push the timing advance piston in the IP to advance "cold" timing. as engine temp comes up the wire is de-energized and returns IP to normal condition. A more technical explanation is available out there I'm sure, But that's it in a nut shell. BTW, I dont even run mine hooked up.

okay, that is how i figured it. i didnt know whether it closed to adv timing or opened tho. what i am now trying to figure out is how to make it stay open (or take it apart and open it up?) all the time. today it is 87 deg here. the truck has not been started today. i pulled the wire that goes to the ksb and it does not get hot (+12v) when i turn the key on. is there any chance you have it backwards and that wire only gets hot when a temp sensor somewheres (on the intake maybe) see's low temps????

thanks, don

You have a picture of the wrong one. There are two styles and both function very differently. I won't take time to explain how each operates, here.

Your pump; simply remove the wire to the solenoid.

opps, well thank you for pointing that out. i tried to pull the solenoid outta mine but it is in there pretty good. didnt want to break nothin taking it out so i energized it (12v+) with the engine running and sure enough, it advanced the timing...

rpm came up almost 50 rpm at idle and about 25 rpm at 1800

why scott? i still have to learn how to accurately set the static timing but isnt this an easy way to give the thing 7 degrees?

i am not ready to pull the whole front off of my motor so i can move the gear a tooth or two just yet

don

It's not that though. Plan a long weekend to change the coolant/clean bug out of the IC and rad. Pull the front cover and tab the pin. Lock-tite the bolts and new front seal. Maybe a few new coolant hoses and water pump, eh? Move the gear a tooth. :)

I'll bet your rig could use some TLC in that area.

The KSB won't give you another 7° above what the pump would normally give. It just gives advance when needed not "on top of" what it has at full case pressure.

unfortunately all that stuff has been done. some a little more recently than others. if i pull the front back off i will probably pull the head too.

yea, once i drove it i noticed that it didnt seem to make a whole lot of diference.

how did you type the degree symbol?????????
