I've been out of the country for a bit. before i left, my upgrade options for my 07 5. 9 seemed limited. as i understood, it was due to software in this truck that is problematic for the aftermarket performance development guys.

did edge get with it on this truck yet? does the smarty still smoke too much? should i consider banks for this truck?... ... . etcetera

do torque converter upgrades still throw codes for "no lock up"?

what's working? or is it still too soon for this truck?

jeff

Works: Smarty, Edge, Bullydog, Quadzilla, DiabloSport

Doesnt: TST, Van Aaken C5 (not sure if TS works or not)

Banks cost way too much and you dont get the power as lesser priced programmers/boxes, so I wouldnt go that way. Never heard of TC throwing a no lockup code before...

Then of course theres hardparts like injectors, turbos, intakes, exhausts, etc that work.

i hear you on the banks stuff. i'm not really concerned with "cost more" or the differences in HP as i am with not dealing with glitches in programming.

i had the edge j/a on my 99 and it rocked. so i'm partial to edge but last i checked, they were stuggling with consistently good boxes for my late build. i have zero experience with bullydog, quadz, or diablo. read a little about quadz having similar struggles as edge, although, i have also read a lot of folks who are quite happy with quadz in older trucks.

smarty makes their folks happy it seems, but i hesitate with all the smoke complaints out there. my truck will make a nice little puff bone stock. i think i'd like to not have to crawl off stops to keep smoke down.

the torque converter thing i was refering to was along these lines;

the tightness of after market converters was causing the trucks computer to not see enough rpm drop at lock up and interpreting that as a "no lockup" and throwing a code..... code clears but that's a "no go" for me.

bs? i don't know and can't even find the original post. probably turned into a transmission war thread and got deleted.

hold off for the smarty jr.

uh. that's it? hold off? no info, teasers, a pm with some secret squirrel nuts? and hold off for how long? a month..... year?... . next christmas... . my nephew's bar mitzvah?

i fear your opinions on my concerns here are possibly a little biased anyway. i was hoping to hear from the consumers of these products... . not the pushers.

but you guys can't help yourselves, can you? no worries, if i was a salesman, i'd be doing the same thing i guess.

thanks, i'll keep you in mind if i go with a smarty, or smarty jr, or whatever. so long as it works like i want it to.

my truck is very young. i have time.

peace, j

Based on all the mods I tried with my '03, I've settled on a list for my '07.

After gauges, my first mod will be a Smarty. No doubt the best power-adder I've used. Far superior to the other downloaders available. The second thing I'm getting is a TS Performance MP-8. The Smarty on 5 coupled with the MP-8 at 60% is a wicked combo. (settings may be different on the '07) I'm probably going to have to upgrade my vb, tc, and input shaft at this point.

On my '03 it felt like I was driving my old Mustang GT. The pull was great from bottom to top (and it fell off at 3200, much like my Mustang at 4500).

I know that at least two people bought Smarty's after riding in my truck. I'm a believer.

After the downloader and box, I'll need a lift pump (GDP), intake (AFE Stage II), exhaust (6" stack maybe), and the list goes on. My last truck was quite an addiction. This one will probably be too, but 2 seconds quicker in the 1/4 due to the auto.

I hope TST gets the PMCR figured out for the '07. It was a killer combo with the Smarty, both on the road and on the dyno.

If I could only buy one mod (other than gauges) for my truck, ever, it would be a Smarty.

Ditto that!! I was going to buy that, but because of its incompatibility, I had to "settle" on the Smarty. But from now on, the first thing to buy will be Smarty (after gauges) Im waiting for whoever is first to market, TST or Van Aaken with the C5; the first will be my pick. Until then, I think Im gonna stack the new Quad X2 Race that should be out soon hopefully.

Trust me, the TS MP-8 is a better stack than the Quad box. I had a couple of Quad Xzillaraiders (both standard and race) and they were nice, but no match to the bottom end that the MP-8 gives. The infinite adjustability of the MP-8 is great, too.

If your foot is in the throttle and you need more, just crank up the MP-8 and you get a smooth rush of power. Not the abrupt jerk like you get with the Quad when switched. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the Quad product, I just like the TS MP-8 better.

are you all using the stock charger with these stacks? and are you experiencing much smoke?

here in socal, i just don't want to risk having to deal with the law from too much exit smoke.

thanks for discussing, by the way

Oh really? Hmm, maybe Ill do that then, been thinkin about it too. Thanks for the info.

I think some guys stack with stock turbo, but Ill be upgrading that before I get something to go with Smarty, right now thats all I have on the truck. Before you stack anything though, you need to be sure your lift pump will supply enough fuel to the injection pump first; so a GDP or FASS or something similar should be purchased before stacking. Thats my opinion anyway...

The smoke I get out of my truck with a smarty alone is almost embarrassing. I would hate to see the smoke with a smarty stacked with more fuel. My 05 made way less smoke with way more power.

and so it goes..... back to the one thing that keeps me from investing in the smarty.

The smarty JR will cost less,my guess also have a smokeless setting as well as a 100hp setting for when you want to play more. Cali friendly Oo.

Perhaps my '03 was an anomaly, but it smoked less with the stock turbo than with a 62 or 66. I discovered this in between two turbo changes. I'm not sure why. I think the stocker in my '03 spooled so fast it cleaned up right away. With a SPS66 the smoke was ridiculous.

I could not keep my foot in it with the stock turbo and stacked boxes turned up, though. Too much heat. I'm sure it would smoke like a coal locomotive if I cranked things up, but I wanted to preserve the integrity of my CTD.

Hopefully,reduced smoke downloads coming!

I'm looking forward to a diminished smoke 30-60 hp setting. I've removed my Smarty due to too much smoke while trying to use Smarty's potential. Hopefully downloads are coming. :D
