My W250's getrag makes a whining noise in 4th and 5th gears only, it is not RPM or road speed dependent, only does it in those 2 gears and goes away when the clutch is pushed in. Ideas? Thanks

Seems strange that there is a whine in fourth. There is little load on the bearings and gears in fourth. Fifth is overdrive and does load all the bearings and shafts in the transmission with differential speeds on the various parts.

Just a guess but probably something at the back of the transmission. Rear mainshaft bearing, speed bearing on Fifth or the countershaft bearing at the back.

As I have said before, the Getrag doesn't whine unless there is a problem. Don't run it to destruction.

The truck is already off the road. I took the drivers side PTO cover off and pried on the main and countershaft gears and got some play front to back. I take it there isn't supposed to be any play front to back on anything, or is it just on certain stuff?
