When doing my routine underhood checks I saw that my filter minder was 100% pulled down with only 2500 miles on a new Baldwin PA4162. This hasn't happened before on my '06 so I pulled the air filter to see why. The picture below is what I found, lots of dried leaves. Keep in mind this is with a totally stock air box and filter.

Kewl picture.

Revenge of the Leaf Blowers? probably some animal preparing for winter, very few able to winter in Florida, however if you are in a mild winter state, some animal practicing for a trip north. (were you planning a trip north? animals have been known to be able to sense these things) Once looking at a used car on a dealer's lot in Brisbane Australia, on lifting the hood a good 5 gallon buckat full of either seeds or nuts poured out near a flat portion of the interior bodywork. Many motor cycle owners have been surprised on fitting their motor cycles for the riding season, after a winter lay-up, finding evidence of mice nests in seats, (expensive) some even in the air cleaner, although in those cases they made use of the original material and did not have to bring their own. Hope it did not do any damage to the engine.

Holy cow, you must've lost 100 hp trying to suck air through that thing.

Filter obviously did its job, though. Kept all those leaves out of the engine.

Bought a '50 DODGE dump truck about 20 years ago and it constantly overheated. I finally pulled the radiator out and back flushed it. The top tank was full of kapoc seat padding from mice. Aparently the old farmer that owned it left the radiator cap off.

What is that grayish looking stuff towards the center of the filter? Stuffing from a mattress or something, damn Mickey!!

You nailed it Ryan. The leaves were somehow sucked up from the air intake between the fender liner and fender. This happened during a trip into Oregon and Wash. last month. I think while maneuvering into RV space in a fairly isolated area with a lot of leaves and debris on the ground.

This wonderful truck just kept haulin' but I suspect fuel economy took a hit.

Manteca. ?

My money still goes on a rodent.

Maybe Dodge should add a Warning light on the Dash for Filter restriction?? Might have saved you a few bucks in Diesel Money...

That's a really cool idea. I wonder if a vacuum gauge in the inlet track, just downstream of the filter would read anything useful...

1- The truck was on the run daily during the period between filter install and finding the leaves. It never sat longer than 12 hours. There was nothing in the filter but semi-decayed leaves, similar to those in the campground where I stayed. It would have to have been a really fast mouse :).

2- I never noticed EGT being abnormally high. I have a post turbo sensor and try to keep it below 950*, although I did briefly hit 1050 on one uphill run.

3- The filter minder is a simplistic vacuum gauge of sorts, just need to be sure and check it often.

4- Manteca is Spanish for lard. In Portuguese it's butter. This was a dairy shipping center during its founding early in the 20th century.

It's similar to the campground leaves because that's where the animal shoved them in. It found a nice, warm, dark spot and figured to be a good place to build a nest.

Who knows what it could've been, my bet is squirrel, chipmunk, etc. , but if you've ever lived in that sort of country, you're familiar with how quick rodent nests can be built.

Your truck just didn't suddenly suck up all those leaves...
