This morning on my way to work I got "caught" in a roadside diesel inspection checkpoint. I have seen them before but always thought they were for big rigs. I got flagged to pull in by the state trooper and thought, they must be kidding right? Nope. Evidently in NJ they are going to put into place new emissions standards for medium duty diesel engines (8501-17999 GVWR). At this point the test is a pilot program to see what kind of emissions various trucks are putting out. The current scale is as follows Pre 73 70% opacity (smoke level, particulate levels) 1974-1990 55% opacity and 1991 and newer is 40% opacity. They are looking to reduce these numbers and change the year ranges to Pre 91 40%, 1991-1996 30%, 1997 and newer 20%.
They performed the Snap accerlation test, which means truck in Neutral (manual transmission) and bring the motor to near redline (2500 for me) hold for a second and release. Do this six times and I guess they calculate an avg. My truck being totally stock, except for air filter and exhaust did just fine 8. 96%. They were pretty impressed??? I really didn't know what to expect.
Anyone have similar tests done, maybe on a truck with a plate or other fueling mods, because that was the first thing that came to mind. How much would these mods affect the results.
