Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NV4500 Question

OK. I have an NV4500 and transfer case I bought from someone in the classifieds a year ago and I failed to keep the paper work on. I didn't run them because I was still building the truck. So the bad, the transfer case housing was tweaked so I couldn't slide the drive shaft in. Probably because they were from a wrecked truck. Got that fixed and now it sounds like the trans needs a rebuild. It rattles so bad in fourth gear at a certain RPM it sound like its going to come apart.

So here is my question. Quad 4x4 wants about 800 for a rebuild kit and I can get a rebuild kit from a local supplier for 300. I am out of money and am wondering if the extra cash is really needed? Everybody around here says the parts should be fine from the local parts store. I'm concerned about the quality? Bearings? Etc. Any Ideas?

the quad kit comes with a fully splined billet output shaft and matching fully splined gear

also comes with a split nut to hopefully hold 5th gear on for a while

i dont know how much power you are planning on putting to the trans but i believe the stock stuff, with the exception of the nut, will be fine

Ya the kit with the main shaft is like 1600 if I remember. I'm going to take it apart and look. If the stock main shaft looks good and fifth gear is tight is going to get the cheap stuff. Maybe last a year and then I'll have time to look the the G56. I jsut had the drive shaft built!!

Thanks

I fully rebuilt my NV4500 with all new parts from Quad 4x4 and even put in the main shaft. I have no more that . 003" of end play. I put it all back together and it works fine but my main problem is still there!!! I still have a harsh rattle in 4th at about 1,800 rpm. My double disc has the solid discs, could it be comming from the clutch. This is driving me crazy.

I asked a guy that rebuilds them that buys all his parts at quad and we came to the conclusion that it was the counter shaft rattling because in fourth it is direct and doesn't use the counter shaft and sure enough when I took it apart the bearings were worn a little. Everything else looked great. Its got me stumped. My exhaust is all custom to fit in the Suburban and I know it hits the front of the bell housing. But You would think if it was something else other than the trans it would make it in other gears.

The trans has been removed rebuilt and re-installed. Exhuast wer removed and re-installed when the trans was removed.

i figured that out...

how will you know for sure if you dont get the ex off the motor and see if the rattle is still there?

its been my experience that if ex is touching anything it will make noise

nice looking eng compartment

I think I'll take a wood shim and wedge it in between and see what happens.

Can't do it today. Wife day and I'm dang tired. Plus Taladaga race. SP?

It is a solid double disc SB clutch with a 3,850 pressure plate. I love the clutch. I have the larger billet input shaft. Does it hurt anything making the noise and how do I get rid of the noise?

Jon T

you ever have a harley pull up next to you when you were sitting at a stop light?

one of the old ones that has a multi disc dry clutch in it?

you will hear his clutch over your motor!

I know it rattles with the clutch pedal pushed in. Its when its in fourth under light to heavy load at about 1,800 rpm that I hear a loud rattle.

I recommended the clutch. I have had three SB single disc clutches and they are good but never last more than a year or town and they slip when trying to take off hard.

I love it!! I can take off in third without dumping the clutch and it will build boost and then I can let it put all the way and it sticks. It doesn't chatter to bad when taking off normal. It does everything I want!!

My left leg is twice the size of the right one!!
