Okay I have a good friend that has a 4wd 95 auto doesnt have any bombs. does have a better exhaust and intake and just gauges... . I would like to know some of the problems areas associated with the 12 valves. I know some of the bigger ones kdp etc. but I have always had a newer 24 valve so if you all can chime in that would be great and even stuff that is a quick fix or something to improve... . thanks... .

Fuel lines develop air leaks and need replaced. Use diesel rated hose. Many take out fuel heater as it also develops air leak. Watch your bombs with a stock transmission as it won't take much to make it toast. Many will chime in with more. Welcome to the 12v family. :)

You mentioned "better exhaust". Did he also install the 3 piece manifold? If not, keep a close watch on the stock one . Tends to shrink and shorten slightly over time and possible break the ears on the head. This may not happen to all, but something to keep in mind. Known problem Mine shrunk but I caught it in time. Bought the ATS 3 piece. Had a friend who didn't watch his so he had to buy a new head. :{

Thanks keep em coming and no, just a free flowing exhaust no manifold its really just a farm and trailer tow truck all its life... . not really been abused. has about 225k miles on it... .

I'd fix the starter contacts, stock ones are too small and will give out, several people make kids and are a simple and cheap repair.

transmission cooler lines.

Look at where the transmission cooler lines are braced to the engine. The strap will rub a hole in the lines.

Mine lasted 170k miles before it started leaking.

R-R the fuel solinoid, the rubber boot, check the throttle rod to the pump there wAs a recall on them And the return fuel line, it deteriates and lets air in, hard starting situation.

Exhust manifold

:confused:How do you check for exhaust manifold shrinkage? I checked my 95 manifold but I do not know what I am looking for.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob, Just hafta give it a visual. Look at the end bolts (studs) that hold the manifold to the head. On first cylinder especially. What can happen (but not on all trucks) is the manifold can actually "shorten slightly" over time due to expansion/contraction. The bolt will actually start to bend toward the #2 cylinder and also the bolt near #6 will lean toward #5 (this end's a little harder to get in there to see). Then it may get to the stress point where it can (i've seen it happen)crack the ear it's bolted to ( the head ). I caught mine in time , removed it and installed the ATS 3-piece. Yours may be and can stay OK though. Just something to keep an eye on. Mike
