Today I was at the local Dodge dealer for some scheduled CTD maintenance. While I was waiting, I asked the service rep what the costs are for the (required 67,500 mile) 6. 7 CTD EGR items. He said He had never been asked the question before, so he made a phone call. This is what he found out.

2007. 5 Dodge 6. 7 Cummins,

EGR Valve $444. 00

EGR Cooler $620. 00

2. 5 Hours Labor +$224. 87

------------------------------

$1288. 87 plus the 7% Fl state tax.

$1379. 09 total

I then asked Him, if these items are considered consumables? He said yes. Then I asked if this is a one time $1,379. 09 thing? He stated no these items are (serviced) at consecutive 67,500 mile intervals. Seeing that I have owned three new CTD trucks, I like to know of any future $$ surprises, before I buy a new $$ truck.

Any suggestions?

PLEASE, I'm not trying to start a Flame War. Or am I unhappy with my present CTD truck. But, I would like a new 6. 7 CTD with the six speed auto transmission. That is after all of the required reflashes and Dodge TLC / hidden cost items? are addressed.

Take Care, God Bless.

I'd have to call BS! Since EGR related components have always been considered emissions control items, they should be covered under the 100,000 mile FEDERAL warranty on emission control items. Tell your dealer to replace under warranty!!

... i find it very hard to believe that those fees are for "normal maintenance"... . perhaps if the items required replacing, then yea,maybe... . but i agree with MMEIER... . they SHOULD be covered under emission rules... . heres hoping!!!... . tom:eek:

Hello all,

I went to My Dodge: Dodge Owners Service Manuals - Dodge Cars, Trucks, Minivans, SUVs, Wagons, Hatchbacks and downloaded the 2008 Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel owners manual. (free of charge) Below are my findings.

For those that feel I have raised some type of flag ... Please read the last column from 488 with the two Astrix's** ;)

page 148 PERFORM SERVICE

Your vehicle will require emissions maintenance at a set interval. To help remind you when this maintenance is due, the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) will display “Perform Service”. When the “Perform Service”

message is displayed on the EVIC it is necessary to have the emissions maintenance performed. Emissions maintenance includes replacing the Closed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) filter element, cleaning of the EGR Cooler, and cleaning of the EGR Valve. The procedure for clearing and resetting the 9Perform Service9 indicator message is located in the appropriate Service Information Perform Service The 6. 7L Cummins engine utilizes a Closed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) system, EGR Valve and a EGR Cooler. This system filters and recycles gasses produced in the crankcase during the normal combustion process. Perform Service will be displayed on the overhead console of your vehicle if the CCV filter, EGR Valve and EGR Cooler

is due for required maintenance. The CCV filter is located on the top of the engine valve cover. For additional information, see your local authorized dealer. Catalyst Full See Owner Manual Catalyst Full See Owner Manual will be displayed on the overhead console of your vehicle if the exhaust particulate filter reaches 80% of its maximum storage capacity. Under conditions of exclusive short duration and low speed driving cycles, your Cummins engine and exhaust after treatment system may never reach the conditions required to remove the trapped PM, if this occurs Catalyst Full See Owner Manual will be displayed on the overhead console in your vehicle. If this message is displayed you will hear one chime to assist in alerting

you of this condition.

page 419 Intervention Regeneration Strategy – EVIC

Message Process Flow (Catalyst Full Message) (6. 7L Diesel Engines Only)

Your new Cummins 6. 7L diesel meets all EPA Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Emissions Standards, resulting in the lowest emitting diesel engine ever produced. To achieve these emission standards your vehicle is equipped with state of the art engine and exhaust system. The engine and exhaust after treatment system work together to achieve the EPA Heavy Duty Diesel Engine

Emissions Standards. These systems are seamlessly integrated into your vehicle and managed by the Cummins 6. 7L engine Power train Control Module (PCM). The PCM manages engine combustion to allow the exhaust system’s catalyst to trap and burn Particulate Matter (PM) pollutants, with no input or interaction on your part.

page 420 Additionally, the overhead console in your vehicle has the ability to alert you to additional maintenance required on your truck or engine. Refer to the following messages that may be displayed on your Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC):

WARNING!

A hot exhaust system can start a fire if you park over materials that can burn. Such materials might be grass or leaves coming into contact with your exhaust system. Do not park or operate your vehicle in areas where your exhaust system can contact anything that can burn.

Page 421

Catalyst Stat::::::::::80%

Catalyst Stat::::::::::80% will replace the message Catalyst Full See Owner Manual after it is displayed for one minute. The engine Power train Control Module (PCM) will continue to monitor the amount of particulate matter

trapped in the particulate filter. This message indicates the percentage of the particulate filter capacity that has been used. By simply driving your vehicle at highway speeds for as little as 45 minutes you can remedy the condition in the particulate filter system and allow your Cummins engine

and exhaust After treatment system to remove the trapped PM and restore the system to normal operating condition.

Catalyst Stat:::::::::::80%, 90%, 99%

Catalyst Stat:::::::::::80%, 90%, 99% If you are unable to drive your vehicle under these conditions for an extended period of time after the initial warning notification, the Engine PCM will continue to monitor the particulate filter and will display the progression of particulate filter usage (80, 90, 99%) on the EVIC message center.

CATALYST FULL SERVICE REQD

If the particulate filter reaches 99% of it’s capacity the overhead console in your vehicle will chime twice and display the message CATALYST FULL SERVICE REQD. At this point the engine PCM will register a fault code, the instrument panel will display a MIL light and the engine PCM will derate the truck reducing its horsepower and torque output.

Page 422

The PCM derates the engine in order to limit the likelihood of permanent damage to the after treatment system. If this condition is not corrected and a dealer service is not performed, extensive exhaust after treatment damage

can occur. In order to correct this condition it will be necessary to have the truck serviced by your local authorized dealer.

Catalyst Full See Owner Manual

Catalyst Full See Owner Manual will be displayed on the overhead console of your vehicle if the exhaust particulate filter reaches 80% of its maximum storage capacity. Under conditions of exclusive short duration and low

speed driving cycles, your Cummins engine and exhaust after treatment system may never reach the conditions required to remove the trapped PM, if this occurs Catalyst Full See Owner Manual will be displayed on the

overhead console in your vehicle. If this message is displayed you will hear one chime to assist in alerting you of this condition.

page488

**The EGR Valve and EGR Cooler maintenance will be covered by the manufacturer only at this maintenance interval, for vehicles registered in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont.

It almost makes you wounder? Plus... When every one's truck reaches 135,000 miles or at any time the above chimes and lights go off >>> please note >>> If this condition is not corrected and a dealer service is not performed, extensive exhaust after treatment damage can occur. In order to correct this condition it will be necessary to have the truck serviced by your local authorized dealer.

As you can see, I'm trying to look at both sides of this issue. Yes I do remember reading in my 2004. 5 CTD owners manual, which states: the EPA items are covered under warranty for 100,000 miles. But that was then,... now three and a half years later. I think things have changed. (with any luck some of the items can be cleaned) but what happens $$ if they are deemed in need of replacement?

It takes me back to the 1970's Lean Burn engine controls on the 400ci Chrysler Cordoba. Where if a used car dealer had a car with a bad Lean Control control unit. And you could no longer buy one from MOPAR, you couldn't get the car running well enough to pass the required emissions test. Plus it was illegal to just pull the faulty parts and just switch back to a simple distributor and MOPAR ignition module. So many of these EPA crippled cars were junked.

Well sorry for the very long post, If what I have cut and pasted from the official Dodge web site, Adobe format 2008 owners manual is not correct, what is?

Take care, God Bless

Gotta be to replace as he quoted labor seperate. He still dosen't have the correct service to be performed. Pulling the EGR appears to be all of about 5 mintues or so. Theres not a manufacture out there that expects owners to spend $1379 at 67k for a emmisons maintance. Common sense should have told that guy doing the estimate that. Everyone is still cutting teeth and will awhile on the 6. 7. Kinda like to enable high idle. Quotes from 0 to $80 bucks. Will take a while for some of this to settle down. Egr may be covered 80k. Sag2 looked up some of that stuff a while back.

That sounds a bit pricey for maintenance, I'm betting the dealer is quoting the replacement of the EGR cooler and EGR valve. If you still want to go to that dealer (or any other) ask them that you want the components cleaned (as they are supposed to be cleaned at 67. 5k)... if they still give you grief, give them p/n 68028729AA - that is Mopar EGR system cleaner. That may jog their memory.
