Do you really have to go all out and spend 6 grand on a auto transmission to hold 400-450 hp reliably? I have done searches but things seem foggy... some say yes... some say no. This will be on a 2007 48re daily driver... little to no towing... an ocasional sled pull... maybe one or two a year tops. Anybody with any experience?

No you don't need to go all out for 450hp. You need a Valve body, Torq Converter and Flex plate. You'll spend about $3k for those for a quality setup from Suncoast/ATS/ not sure of others. Stay away from boosted launches even with that setup as you will break stuff. Other than that you should be ok.

converter and valve body are the key elements on the 48RE. You should also do the 1-2 band apply lever along with the apply starp and anchor.

We have had good luck with Goerend

edit: I see you plan to sledpull, your gonna need more LOL

I spent $4k with the DTT Parts in my sig installed..... It holds w/o issue... . i'd guess i'm at around 400+ with the beta smarty... . done a few boosted launches as well (10-15psi)..... should probably add a billet output shaft for that, but i didnt have the $'s at the time... . for true "drive it like you stole it" piece of mind... . add the billet output and you're good to go.

IMHO, all 3rd gens need a billet flexplate, and if you are going to sled pull (that's a pretty good boosted launch to me), go for the billet input shaft. If you leave the factory output shaft, you can just replace that when it breaks. If you do the billet output shaft, you should consider doing a billet intermediate shaft. It's a risk/cost factor. If the intermediate shaft lets go may or may not happen at 450rwhp, but it will wip out the trans and probly the valve body. It potentially split the entire transmission case in half. Well, I have never seen it, but that is what I have been told.

When I say sled pull I mean at the local fair on a pea gravel horse track. They set the sled so light a toyota tacoma can yank it about 280 feet:-laf

I have been down the sled pulling path with a previous rig and I can no longer bring myself to destroy a new truck:D

you up for doin a transmission?

Guys... these are great responses... just the info I was lookin for... thanks a bunch!! Has anybody figured out the cel issue with the tight converters on the late 06's and early 07's yet?

i've called all of the transmission builder favorites on this issue and the only one that even entertains the question is DTT. they say they got it licked but i didn't really understand how. i didn't press too hard for info because i'm not ready to buy yet and didn't want to keep bill on the phone forever trying to explain. he's a busy boy... ..... but you may want to give them a jingle.

ats implied they had it licked as well but had to "call me back to explain" and never called back.

i think it's been figured out and these guys can sense i'm just investigating at this point and therefore don't want to waste time explaining.

by all means post a thread or PM me if you get answers cause i'm just about to the point that i have to do a trans build before i can continue modding

I was told the issue is that when the ECM commands lockup, it looks for a certain amount of RPM drop.

Nice, efficient converters don't drop much rpm at lockup, so the ECM thinks there's a fault and the converter is not locking.

The solution (I've been told) is to run a looser converter. Not exactly what I want to hear, as I'm going to be getting my trans built here soon. There may be a way for a downloader to correct the problem if the programmer feels the need to dedicate the time to the problem...
