Thanks, TDR Staff

What stock of Full Size Pickups etc do you

Steam Engine Torque?

IMHO...

This truck was built to gauge customer interest in a HD (and possibly diesel... ) version of the Tundra.

It was intentionally built to be a bit over the top - and we really shouldn't make any assumptions on how the finished version (if such a thing makes it to market... ) will look, perform or be priced at based on this Frankenstein conglomeration of parts and custom hacking.

Toyota makes one heck of a 1/2-ton - and if they put that same effort into a HD truck, it's going to give the Big Three a real run for the money. Toyota has a longstanding history of finely polishing things (even if sometimes it's a finely polished turd... ) before releasing them - they know that the pickup truck market in the US is very competitive and that they better get it right on the first attempt since they're newbies.

In the meantime, try not to be so brand loyal that you're blind to the technological advancements the 'other' brands are bringing to the table. You just might miss out on something really sweet.

Beers,

Matt

I'm running a 2005 Hino with Eatin 6 speed at work and it is a strong runner... . It out runs my Mitsubishi Fuso and gets better milage to boot. We are getting 10mpg with the Hino (it has a 26' stake bed) my 02' Dodge with a 10' stake only gets 14 mpg.....

Sooooo, being an 8. 0L with "only" 300HP, does this mean it has alot of potential or its a turd that needs that much displacement? I have zero experience with Hino motors... . what applications are they in and whats their rep?

I'm not all that fond of the look, but you guys bashing it as being ugly remind me of the same exact comments I heard from the same board back in 2002 when the first 2003 3rd gens came out. Everybody "hated" the new look.

Most folks take a while to warm up to something new, especially something that has to do with styling.

As for the motor, the early B5. 9s didn't rev over 2600 rpm either. My Cummins N14 wouldn't rev passed 1850 rpm until I had the computer parameters revised to a whopping 2100 rpm. 2600 rpm is fine if you've got enough gear...

As some have said, another viable alternative added to the market will only serve to enhance competition, give the buyers more choices, and increase value to the customers. Hey, you don't have to buy one, but it just might make the "Big Three" build a better truck that you WILL buy.

I say, bring it on!

*I* still don't much care for it, compared to the 2nd generation trucks!

Well, yeah - but seems strange that the best Toyota can present TODAY, is what Dodge offered way back in the 1st generation trucks... :-laf

Personally, even for a "concept truck", I'd expect better from Toyota...

But you're correct, more players SHOULD produce more and better choices! :)

I like it. I expect that it's going to be a real winner. After all, it's a Toyota. Toyota doesn't build anything that isn't a winner. My wife and I each have Toyota cars and we love them. I also love my 05 Dodge, but more competition is great. Dodge wouldn't be what it is today if it wasn't for competition from Ferd and Chevy. Also, Toyota has the sense and wisdom to use an inline 6.

YUP - we've been hearing for some time now about what Toyota was bringing to the market - I just expected something a bit different - as you say, Toyota has a great reputation - I had one of their older gasser pickups and a Corona sedan - both were outstanding. Just as whatever Toyota eventually DOES produce will also be. :D

I know the big three will have to produce a better truck. Toyota will make sure of that. They dont make garbage. Nissan damb near went under because they tried to build a better diesel than Hino(toyota). The big three when it come to trucks in Japan are Hino, Mitzubishi, and Isuzu. I know Toyota makes their engines tight and to hop them up will be easy and it will be able to handle twice its rated horse power. Chevy,Dodge, and Ford should be very scared.

I dont think the cummins guys getting over TRIPLE the stock rating are too scared of Hinos potential. I agree toy does make quality, but sorry THIS isn't it.

ok, not to get toooo distasteful here... . but am I the only one that thought the shifter in video looked like... ... . well you tell me.

I'm sitting in the airport on my way home from SEMA - article, video, and pics to follow (probably tomorrow). Keep in mind the Toyota was a "prpject vehicle" so it doesn't necessarily represent accurately what may go into production. While the engine and trans (Eaton trans btw) look stout the rear end looked pretty small to me - slightly bigger than a 1/2 ton rear end but not what I'd expect. The front end was a very weak looking IFS.

Before I met dodge I used to be a yota fan. You wouldn't see me in this thing. Even my wife who LOVES toyotas said this thing looks like an ugly monster. I agree Jason... under torqued for the engine size.

Alphacowboy, seems there's a very understanding and grateful male somewhere in that cab, viewing that scene, it should be a great seller in San Francisco. (who cares about the engine anyway!) (never ever heard it called a shifter before, one learns something every day)

I like it... except for the "shifter".

Low power and low RPM's = long life. I'm sure the power will be there when this thing hits the market.

It does need more gears though.

They really had to cut into that firewall to make it fit. I really wonder if it ran. As said it's to get interest going. Great SEMA show like always
