Yes I run a stock cam. I would have nothing against an aftermarket one if the price was right,

Just got thru repairing mine. The cam gear had walked off . 167. The odd thing is that it lacked about . 065 from being seated from the factory. The reason i suspected this issue was due to the fact that i lost about 15psi of oil pressure. The cam walks out and partily exposes all the hole except for the front one due to the cam bearing being wider than the other journals. You can inspect the gear without pulling the front cover by looking down beside the pump gear and match up the gears protrution from one to the other. Installed the new cam and problem solved.

Why not? warpage? Brittle? How about drilling and putting a bolt in the end with a big washer? I really dont want to have to take the cam out.

I will never put a cam in that does not have a retainer!I had one that was welded on, tigged I believe and in less then 1000 miles the entire weld was already broken, would the weld still keep it on..... maybe?

I would suggest you talk to someone that really knows metal, not just any welder pro or not and ask him what he thinks about welding the 2 different types of medal together. Then concider the gear and the "potential" for making it brittle, then concider the cost of a new engine :{

Brad Ponci of Ponci's Diesel Center saw the cracked weld on the gear that was welded and did the work on my engine including the installation of the new "bolt-on gear" camshaft that Piers' and Harry of peakdieselperformance provided for me!

Good luck to ya any way you go!!

I think until the money and time to put a new cam in I like the idea I can inspect it and make sure it isn't comming off. I would love to put a nice cam in but I really dont need one and I have to many other projects.

The cam that Brad got spools 150rpm's quicker than the one you got Jeff. I offered the same one to Brad to install in your engine... but he told me NO... something about being sure he could beat you in a race;)

Now you know the "other" half of things:)

I knew it!! I told Harry that we needed to keep you outta this, had a feeling Brad had gotten to you LOL

I was going to tell you Jeff. But brad promised to make my new transmission 95% as strong as his if I kept my mouth shut.
