Howling Differential

Hi everyone. We have an '05 3500 c & c on the lift, just in process of popping the rear diff cover. She howls badly. We tried new synthetic oil with additive. She was so serious, we trailered her in here. Wondering if anybody on here has been into something similar ?????????

If its howling its eather been run low on fliud or maybe had a pinion seal replaced and someone didn't get the pinion nut/yoke back in the same spot and screwed up the preload on the pinion gear/crush sleeve. Of course you won't6 know until you open it up and take it apart while measuring clearances. How many miles on it?

As far as I know it has never been low on fluid but it may have been run on some very long intervals between oil changes. It has pulled hard all its life but I don't think the diff was ever worked on before. When I opened it up I saw the teeth are wore through about an 1/8 in. on the outer edge of the ring gear. It has about 115,000 mi.

There was a TSB released on the howling diff that included replacing the driveshaft if the customer complained. I dont recall the #, but they did it for me

Just a thought, I had a similar noise but mine turned out to be the carrier bearing, of course I have a long bed not sure what you have. Everyone that looked at mine including the dealer said it was the diff but a few shims later I was back in business, no more noise. I could be way off on your problem but I thought it would be good to throw this information in the pot. Good luck. ROB

Yeah, with the mileage you are probably right. Heck, I was pretty skeptical that it would fix mine, but somehow it did (or they rebuilt my diff and didnt tell me)

Ya mines howling too ,I have about 5k till the 70k warranty is gone so I need to get it in.

Well I got it all taken apart and I'm replacing the crown and pinion gear, the left carrier bearing, and the wheel seals. I appreciate the advice.

Last night got it all back together and she works well.
