We've always been told to warm the transmission before draining the oil. But- the last time the truck was driven and parked the oil was hot and subsequently drained to the oil pan and the low areas of the transmission. You are going to remove the oil pan anyway so can clean up the residue so I'm wondering if it makes any sense to get the oil hot again before draining. Any thoughts?

Do it cold, the fluid will drain out of the coolers and and down to the pan. The reason for warming up an engine is to get the sediment stirred up so it will drain out. In the transmission, you are going to pull the pan any ways, so any sediment will settle to the bottom of the pan and the magnet. Just wipe it out.

Thanks guys. Now, if I can just figure out how to loosen that tight plug on my Mag Hytech pan with that spindly 3/16 hex wrench (already broke one) I'll be cruising.

It worked out just fine. Measured 8+ quarts, which matches a previous hot drain (then left overnight) quantity collected. Service manual says 4 quarts required for trans oil change so given time to drain, you can double that.
