More ECM troubles. ECM & PCM how are they integrated?

Hesitation at low rpm's

When I am accelerating from a near dead stop and only when accelerating fairly hard, I hear a screaming noise coming from my turbos, and I believe I found the culprit.

My top turbo (ps62) on the propeller shaft has visible play side to side, none however back and forth.

What does this indicate the problem is? Worn turbo bearings? Is it something that might be fixable by the average gear head? (aka myself?) or should I get a professional? or could that not be the problem? I'm prettu sure that is the problem. I have not checked the bottom (k31) turbo yet.

How does something like this happen?

Any and all help is appreciated!

Thank You

**Update**

I took the ps62 out of the truck, I didn't not take it apart cause I do not want to void any warranty that I may have. I put my hand on opposite ends of the shaft and I can move the shaft side to side.

Just for grins I took a look at the bottom turbo and felt for play on the propeller shaft and there is a little bit, buy barely noticeable.

I'm not an expert but I am pretty sure that there should not be any play at all, I think there might be something wrong with the 62. I will def call II on Monday and see what they think. Am what I describing sound like a problem to any one else?

, UP AND DOWN/SIDE TO SIDE PLAY IS NORMAL,AS LONG AS THE TURBINE OR COMPRESSOR WHEEL DOESNT CONTACT THE HOUSING, IN AND OUT IS BAD, SINCE THE TURBO IS OUT OF THE TRUCK, I WOULD SEND IT BACK TO II... :)

Check your exhaust manafold bolts and gaskets. A loose manafold will cause a squeal.

Yeah you need to have some play but if it scrubs the housings its to much you should be able see if there was any contact. I have seen where manifold gaskets or turbo to manifold gaskets blow out from not having the bolts tight enough and youll get a screeching whistle noise at higher boost levels. Doubt its the turbo itself.

Oh that will be good news if that is all that it is. I did not see any areas on the turbo where the turbine was contacting. Perhaps I should just re-apply the the exhaust manifold. with brand new gaskets. I did re-use the old manifold gaskets, and did not have a problem until friday. It has been getting colder and I'm wondering if something just wasn't tight enough and it contracted enough to leak and make that god awful noise. I should probably get a new manifold gasket from cummins or ats or whoever's product is better.

I am still going to call II and see what they think.

GO WITH THE MARINE GASKETS DIRECT FROM CUMMINS

I noticed my turbo to manifold gasket going when I would hit the exhaust brake and there was a terrible screeching sound, at WOT it would do it as well but the sound of the motor didnt make it sound near as bad compared to just the exh. brake. Blew out one complete side of the turbo to manifold gasket.

**another update**

I removed the ats turbo gaskets, Basically I have the ats manifold, an exhaust gasket, A space plate and a plate to turbo gasket. As you can see in the pics, I think I found the source of my blowout.

On the first pic, the gasket over to the right was the manifold-plate gasket the ones below them are close up views of the plate gasket and plate.

Just to be on the safe side, I will get new exhaust manifold gaskets from cummins as well as a new manifold-plate and manifold-turbo gasket.

After a call to II and all the wonderful folks on tdr, I re-applied the turbo to exhaust manifild gaskets and the problem went away! I believe I blew out the gasket in the pics i posted. Thanks again guys and gals!

Good catch MattyMac and motorhead!!
