4 cylinder cummins frost plug

just a test....

I just started to read the 12/07 issue of "DIESEL POWER" (yhea, I got the subscription as a gift) and in it, there is a hop up article for 6. 0 P/S folks. It seems that when you hammer a 6. 0, it looses coolant. The fix is a race engine basic- to install head studs. I'll just say that the article begins with the cab already in the air

I dunno, if you flip a few pages there's a kick butt 12V Cummins that look as if it was lifted out of a FedEx truck- untouched- grime and all putting down big numbers.

i read that article also and was happy it only took me two hours to do my head studs. . !!

A 3rd gen with head studs? Did you heave the head in place and just remove the bolts and replace w/ studs? Is there enough room at the back under the cowl to do the job?

Yes you can leave the head in place, just remove one bolt and install a stud (torque to one of the lower numbers in the service manual) There is plenty of room under the cowl. Another topic that has been beat to death on here is if you should take the extra time and bottom tap each hole. I say yes, any extra thread contact you can get make them stronger. I feel that if ARP didn't think they should be that long they wouldn't have made them that long. Others like to cut corners and have a "good enough" attitude. You can install the studs and bottom tap the holes and leave the head installed. (with the correct tools)

Also removing the cab on a 6. 0L isn't as hard as you'd think. A good Ford mechanic can do it in about 20min (helps to have a lift) Duramaxes are the same way. Local D-Max performance shop can have the engine out of the truck in 3hrs with only one guy. But if that's all you ever work on you learn shortcuts.

I know lifting the cab is the preferred method nowadays, though I attended a course given at a ford dealer a year ago, and there were a few superduties with engines out, and they were all taken thru the front. Not one cab lifted. On a different occasion I had a conversation with a reputable ford tech from a different dealer, and I quizzed him about body lifting (specificaly the econoline) and he said it's not a good idea because it wakes up squeaks and harness problems.

I just think about the average guy working on his truck, and a stud job on a 6. 0 will absolutley take things out of his hands. It's just amazing how well our rams were designed in comparison, whereas he might have a chance. I also recently had a peek at an '08 SD, and it's way more packed than the 6. 0, there's even fuel line style quick connects at the radiator!
