Threads. I found it easier to take them along with all the other joints/bushings etc. etc. to a frame shop and have THEM do the work. I have the special tool but it was a bear. The "threads" are not actual threads.
The upper ball joints screw in. The lowers press in... You will need a special socket and a 3/4" drive impact wrench for the uppers... A hand ratchet is not a good idea ! You can pull the truck off of the jack stands ... .
I replace both uppers and lowers , upper control arm, bushings, tie rod ends and steering box on the left side. The uper control arm was cracked and had to be replaced. The original ball joints are threaded in, the replacements are pressed in. Hope it helps !
