Where or who, are/has these available? Does anyone refurbish these units? Any info appreciated. What are the alternatives? Manual actuated/ fuel shutoff solenoid replacement? Other associated problems? Mechanical speedometer? Charging system? Ideas? GregH

Greg,

The PCMs can still be had from the dealer. I paid a little over $200 plus shipping for mine about 2 years ago. A specialty automotive electrical shop can rebuild them but they're very pricey. I was quoted $400 when I was looking at options to replace my PCM. As far as charging, you could do the external regulator conversion.

Aloha,

Matt

Matt, The PCM for the Auto Transmission truck is available. I tried the Dealer for the manual transmission unit and they said it is no longer supported, not available! GregH

Greg,

My bad, I thought you had an auto. Well, your next option is a rebuild by an automotive electrical specialty shop. Good luck.

junk the pcm and go with out it. . voltage regualtor and speedo froma early first gen . . you only need to get 12v at the fuel shut off . . if you gut it then you only need to have your grid heaters and your starter. . etc. . all mechanical is the way i would go...

A PCM for an auto should work in a manual truck, just not the other way around. The only difference in the auto one is the overdrive funtion from what I was told. I bought a PCM several years ago for my 89 granny 4 speed gasser truck, and the only one available was the auto one, but thats what the parts manager said would work. I never ended up using it though, so I can't say for sure.

junk the pcm ????

The speedo does not need the pcm... All that is needed is to ground the wire that goes from the speed sensor to the pcm... Fuel shut off needs nothing. . Voltage regulator from a 1970 to 1991 will need to be used. . Grid heaters can be wired with a manual push button or make a time delay relay system... Starter system needs nothing... .
But now for the BAD news..... No PCM = no cruise control !!! And theres no way around it ! The older cars/trucks used a mechanical/analog servo unit that was made by Eaton. It was a great unit... . BUT it can not and will not hold up very long in a diesel due to the vibration of the diesel engines...
This is really disturbing to me. Loosing the cruise control is a deal breaker for me. I can't drive long distances with out it... The day will come when there are no more pcm's left... But as of now there are still some rebuilts out there.
So for now I would fix the pcm

Rostra electric servo cruise. Works better than stock. I also won't drive long distances without cruise. Or short ones either.

Paychk, Thanks for the quite in depth information. That will take me some time to digest. I did not realize the wiring harness had a diagnostic port for the PCM!! GOOD INFO!

AKimmel, That is a good thought about the auto transmission version. I do not have cruise control or AC. It is a base unit. I would think it could work. Worth some investigation.

Now to find a rebuilder for my old PCM.

DEO, Your idea is still a viable option. Compared to the cost of a new vehicle!

Thanks for all of your input and Happy Thanksgiving to each one and your families! GregH

What part number did you get? My dad's 91 has cruise but it will not hold worth a darn, it flutters a lot, and is to the point that he will not use it, thanks

I don't remember the number, but they usually have only one electric servo model. You have a choice of controls to match OEM or not. If your dad has a vacuum servo cruise, they just don't work on HD or diesel applications.
