Hey Guys

I read the artical "ask the engineer " on the 68rfe. The artical states that there is a spin on external filter on the return line from the cooler, it even gives a part # for the filter. There is not one on my truck, Dose anyone have it on there truck?

I didn't see one when I looked. I glad you brought that up. It was about midnight when I read that and meant to bring it up. Must have been half asleep. I hadn't thought of it again untill I saw your post.

It may be the same as the 545rfe which has the spin on filter mounted inside the pan along with the traditional filter. .

Can someone explain to me what good a spin on filter is good for inside the pan. I understand more filter material but why inside the pan.

There is a spin on filter----------inside the pan.

Bob

That has to be the most genius design of the century, sometimes you have to wonder about these engineers. Did read that there are no bands to adjust anymore, so what other reason to drop to pan other than to change the oilfilter (s) ?? would figure that with no reason to drop the pan you would put on a spin on the outside, saves on maintenance , time ,oilmess on the floor :)and less chance of contamination. pure genius

Yea, but then the dealer couldn't charge you 1,000 bucks to change the fluid. :-laf

There is also a conventional style filter

Drain Plug?

Did the engineers incorporate a drainplug in the pan? Or is the do-it-yer-selfer stuck with oil draining out from four points of the compass when removing the pan? 'Course, most commercial ATF maintainence uses the "backflush" technology that does not require access to the guts of yer Auto transmission. The filter then is a seperate job! GregH

They want to be sure that the oil is changed with the filter! Good ole maw Chrysler taking care of us.

Yeah but, dropping the pan doesn't ensure that more than 3-4 qts is changed, far less than a full change.

Spin on inside the pan, that has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

Spin on transmission Filter

#@$%! why in the world is a spin on filter only accessible by dropping the transmission pan? Any why is it they can't install a $5 drain plug from the factory in the pan so it's easier to do without a total mess?
