Radio Harness

Does any know if you have to use a "CAN-BUS" harness for an aftermarket headunit or if a generic harness will work.



There is a big difference in cost between the two, I'm just not sure what the "CAN-BUS" harness does that the others don't offer.

By the way, I don't have steering wheel radio control so that is not an issue. I guess the big question is if I remove the stock radio will the truck not work because of some sort of anti-theft thing the can-bus accomplishes?

best bet would be to contact a stereo shop they could point you in the right direction . without any mistakes . you would think that the aftermarket harness would work without any problem's .

I put an aftermarket Panasonic in mine using the Crutchfield supplied harness. Works great.

Canbus is for the 06' and up trucks. The computer talks to the radio through low speed Canbus. I've been waiting for a definitive ok before swapping to aftermarket. I'm not paying the high price for MyGig when aftermarket has more options cheaper.

I ended up buying the "Can-Bus" harness from Best Buy since it was only $50. My guess is the non can-bus harness would work just fine, but I did not feel like running back and forth the Best Buy.

Out of curiosity I will try and start my truck once I unplug the factory radio. Other then the can-bus adapter giving a key-on source I see no point to it.

Let us know how it works. What aftermarket brand radio did you install? Does your dash have the half moon cut outs? Where did you buy the trim to fit?

I took my 06 in to have a pioneer after market installed. Not sure what they did but the one hour install turned into 4!!! Your right, they said the computer was talking to the radio etc. THey had to remove my Gear shift knob and the cup holders etc. . They re-routed the power source I think to cigarette lighter ( Not sure). But they made it work. There was 3 grease monkeys all up inside the darn thing. . Looked like the space shuttle. I couldn't watch!!! LOLOL

Whoops. Sorry, didn't see you had an '07. I'm sure it's different than mine. I would still give Crutchfield a call. Their customer service is very helpful and I'm sure they can answer your question. Besides, their prices are pretty good, usually include shipping, and all the hardware necessary for install.

The truck's coming with a standard stock radio with the half moon cutouts. Once it gets here, I'll be installing a Pioneer AVIC-D3 dual din navigation/DVD unit. In order to do this I am buying a dash bezel for a truck with built in navigation and then Metra sells a fit kit to convert the nav bezel down to a dual din.



If you need the dash bezel or Metra part numbers let me know and I can dig them out.

I am looking to do this install on my 06 CTD wondering if you installed your self & if so how did it go also any special harnesses my truck is the base model single disc with 4 speakers right now crutchfield has AVIC-D3 on sale with free back up camera if any one else has done this please let me know how it went Thanks in advance

As it sounds like you will be replacing the stock head unit with an after market one, there are quite a few options available too you. The hard part is keeping the stock head unit and adding after market amp's and processors to the mix. I have that info if you want it.

A number of the aftermarket head units need additonal info from sensors on the truck. Many of the units with NAV need Vss (speed sensor) input. Some of the head units which play DVD videos need parking brake input (so you can't watch a video in the front seat unless the parking brake is engaged). The adapters get all that info from the can-bus so you do not have to locate all the sensors and run wiring to them. It really simplifies wiring.

Jim bob24 thanks for the info do you know if the canbus is all the wiring i need i am getting different info one says canbus & another post on the dodge truck forum says wiring harness 70-6502 which looks like i need to splice wires i dont mind spending the money if can bus is all i need to install after market AVIC-D3 i appreciate all the info from every body so far

If you are using a can-bus adapter specific to your vehicle, like the PAC C2R-CHY ( Products ) and you are replacing a stock radio with no additional amps or add-on equipment, the can-bus adapter should be all you need. You can get a lot of installation information for the AVIC series units at avic411.com. You will connect one side of the can-bus adapter to the harness on your new Pioneer unit (this side will be spliced/soldered) and the other side will have a plug which goes to the plug that originally went to your stock radio, so you should not have to cut or splice any of your stock wiring. As mentioned previously, the can-bus began with the '06 trucks. Hope that helps.

That is exactly what i was looking for i am not planning on adding any thing else to the radio at this time. Thanks for the part numbers & web site for installing the head unit i am hopefully doing this after the holidays (family comes first) with the info you gave me it sounds like it should be pretty straight forward.
