Exhaust Brake

I am new to the diesel. I grew up a mechanics son and understand engines, I understand how the engine brake works, but I must confess I am not sure I totally understand how to use it. Using it while towing down steep grades is easy (and the brake very effective) but as I read about the features it almost suggests that you should just turn it on all the time. Can someone point me to something that gives some detail on how to really use the integrated exhaust brake on the 6. 7? I read the articles in this months magazine, but I want more detail on when to turn it on and when to leave it off.

This is how I run mine right at start up I hit the switch and forget about it from there it will save brakes and **** tailgater's off so I am happy

E Brake Always On

Loaded or not, towing or not mine is always on unless I forget to hit the button when I start it up. Works very well and saves the disc brakes.

I second that. If I were to guess I would say it's in the ECM programming that makes it work the way it does.

I just leave mine on all the time except in slow stop and go traffic to put the shifting back to normal. It will sift at a lower rpm and softer when creeping. And mine stays on unless I turn it off.

I run mine turned on all the time. What I was saying when I start my pickup in the morning(or any time) I want the e-brake on, not off. You are saying yours is automatically on, you have to punch the button to turn it off.

I concur, start truck, turn on EB. IF it needs more braking action switch to tow haul and shift down through the gears as required.

The exhaust brake on the 5500 I test drove the other day was on till you turned it off, the truck retained what ever setting you shut it off with. If it was on when you shut down, it was on when you started back up, and I assume the same for off since it was off when I first started the truck.

Just like a PacBrake... if you rest your foot on the throttle... just off idle the brake will shut off... this is nothing more than a learned behavior... .
