Yesterday I noticed for the first time that I was getting black soot on my rear fender above the tailpipe. I have never seen this before on this truck. I have 31000 actual miles on it. It is an '03, and still stock except for the AFE intake. All details are in my signature. I have never had a black box, even for a test drive. About 2/3 of the mileage has been pulling a 17K fiver all over western USA.

Is it normal for 3rd gens to start smoking while still stock?

Thanks... . Steve

Mine always got dirty on the back even before I started using a box. It probably isn't so much "black" smoke as just diesel exhaust. I have used extended tips on all my diesels to keep things a bit cleaner.

I'd be more worried if I DIDN'T see soot on the fender / bumper. Black soot just means you have a happy Cummins! Hammer down!

Mine is the same as your, stock with only an intake, and since mine is an 05, it has a Cat, and it has always had some black soot on the leading edge of the rear bumper. I'm surprised you never noticed before now.

My friends dad has an 05' it is bone stock from performance to suspension and tires and that thing smokes more than one of my other friends 03' that has the juice with attitude, but it only does one good cloud until you turn it off and let it cool down for a few hours

Mine always had a little soot on the leading edge of the bumper just above the tailpipe.

Not anymore! For some reason, it just stopped doing it at some point. I have no idea why.

mine shows no signs of soot on the bumper or fender, but i do have aftermarket exhaust on it so the exhaust is a little bit in a different positoin

Thanks guys. I always get a little worried when something new happens. (I'm not paranoid, I KNOW they are out to get me. )

Sounds like all is good. I'll sleep better now.

Thanks again... ... Steve
