Looking to find out what the best DV's to use with this combo. I will use a #10 plate or #5, with a good set of 215's. Not looking for black belching smoke, just a nice increase that is kind on the auto transmission.

No power increase is kind to your transmission!! But I would use 191's. I have a #5 plate plus some other mods. and have been able to get them to work fine. And I'll never touch them again. Only a mod. pump will do now. :-laf

There is no reason to change the stock delivery valves unless you want to smoke.

I put 191's in my 175 pump. Yeah, a lot more smoke if you want it, but I think they fuel a lot harder than my stockers.

You will likely be re-building the transmission at some point after you do the work you describe. You might as well do it before it blows on you. If I'm not mistaken, the #5 plate will boost your power by around 70hp. You will want to use the power. I have been plowing snow with my '98 and the #5 plate works perfectly. Lots more low end power and plenty at other speeds. But I'm really glad I did the transmission work.

I do not pull trailers or heavy weight. If I do it is twice a year max. I also don't need to floor it at every intersection either. Just if there is some stuborn person going under the speed limit.

Just a thought.....

You are only going w/ 215 HP Inj's but you may or may not get a stumble, rough spot at 1200 rpm that is noticeable and irritating but still drivable w/ your 160 HP P-Pump. A set of 181 or 191 delivery valves should help clean up this stumble somewhat, but not eliminate it. Since you are going to have the injector lines off anyway, it may be the time to do the DV's at the same time.

Tough Call.

Wait for other TDR members opinions on this. Or TST, Piers Diesel or any reputable diesel performance shop can advise.

If you don't want a bunch of black smoke, swap out your 131 DV's for 181's, go with a 3K gov kit & a #10 plate, then you can use the plate & AFC housing to set it up with good clean power.

Great advice no doubt but, be careful with this guys advice he is right if you can stop yourself :rolleyes:... ... ..... taking you back many years ago to a small Calif. town named Tulare here I was a young innocent man looking for just a tad more power with alittle $$$ in my pocket

enter THE Canadian Tequila King Piers' Harry known around the diesel world to know a thing or two about Cummins :-laf... ... ... . taking you to today,

well here I am with 2 98 Dodge 12 Valves in various stages of smoking ability, and horsepower and a unknown ability to consume un-godly amounts of Mexican Kool-Aid without a dime to my name :{

Love you guys Home

I second that. Don't have a 3k kit, yet, but it will work great. :cool:

I think the 191s won't do you any real good, other than smoke like crazy. They did help to spool the turbo, but added gobs of smoke and higher EGTs. Really no gains in power from what I can tell.
