I am looking at a '98 quad cab, short bed, 5spd, 4X4, sport SLT for a friend. It has 160,000 mi and is in good to excellent condition, The asking price is $14,995, what do you all think, is this about right?

I paid $15k for my '97 in '01, w/ 139k miles on the clock.

Given the specs, if it were mint and had a long bed instead of the short, I wouldn't have much trouble being willing to pay that much. Given what the new trucks go for, and with the emissions crap, I'd say it might be worth it.

Helps if you know the truck. Has any mods? did it? what color is the turbo? are manifold bolts blue? if its from a stranger or isn't "perfect" for the money, I'd keep looking around.

Im selling my 98 24 valve 5 speed 4x4 leather quadcab shortbox with 132,000 miles with a new VP, Fass, Southbend OFE, and 4 inch exhaust for 10,000. Shows some rust and isnt perfect but runs great.

I would say the price on that 12 is steep unless its near perfect even though the 12 is more sought out.

Sounds quite high to me as well. My '01 ran me 16,500 with only 86K miles. It was not mint, but runs great. Tell them to come down or move on. Sounds like they really don't want to sell it. (Put it up for sale to please the wife maybe??? But, price it so dang high that nobody wants it! haha!) It could happen

I looked around for a 98 12V quad-cab 4x4 for a while. They are still pretty expensive, if they are in good condition. Since they were only made for a few months during the 1998 model year, they are pretty rare. I don't think I saw a 4x4 12v QC for less than 14k and as high as 19k. I ended up finding a 2wd 12v QC that I liked so I bought it for around 9. 5k (had rear end damage). You can't really compare them to older 12V's (no quad cab) and newer 24V's (not a 12V) in terms of value. It's a pretty tough find and expensive if it was well-kept.

For what it's worth, the last 12v QC 98 4x4 I found listed for $16,500 (at a dealer). I just decided I didn't need 4x4 that badly... I hope I'm right.

I would say based on prices around here, (CO) that is actually a pretty good price. Not a really good deal because of the mileage, but not horrible either.

I agree completely, for those trucks, the specific combination of 12 valve, quad cab, shortbox, manual 4x4 is highly sought after (its the holy grail after all!). I stumbled on one for 13,500 and woulda jumped on it in a heartbeat if I hadnt just bought my 07 6 months earlier. There simply is no comparison between them and the earlier/later trucks...

Thanks guys. I took another look at it today and it isn't quite as nice as I first thought. My friend might take a look at it tomorrow. It is on a lot and they said that they will come down some.

I have my Long Bed auto for sale for $15K. It has 180 on the clock, has always been garaged and is near perfect condition. So. Cal high desert. Nice part is that it has day time running lights, no EGR and a few up grades.

Pictures anyone? Send me an email to -- email address removed --

My friend just bought an identical truck with 100k for 10Gs. It would have to have a lot of upgrades and be in purfect shape for me to buy it at that price.

I just watched a stock 98 QC LB Auto 4x4with 132k on it sell out here for 18,900. That price is not that high and if the truck is clean it would command more if the owner shopped it better..... Andy

wow, somebody got stole! I love my 98's, but that's getting close to 3rd gen territory these days!

It's not always the sticker price. When I bought my 98 the dealer said he wanted X amount. I said I don't really care if you want $20K, what I care about is the difference between my 97 and the 98. After the dickering he ended up asking $15K for his 98 and gave me $13K for the 97.

For the $2K difference I am plumb happy with the QC, 3. 55 gears (better cruising and fuel mileage), 98-02 interior, newer NV4500 and transfer shift, no more mystery motor (no engine id tag and NO ONE could figure it out), 50K fewer miles (154K vs 104K), a straighter body, and a better resale value down the line when this model is a collector's classic. :)

Aren't short beds as handy as teats on a boar?

I settled on 15 because that's what the Kelly blue book said it was worth. I had well over $15K in up grades and offered it for $20 and didn't have one offer. So, since I had all the original equipment I took most of it back off and listed it for the 15. It is drop dead beautiful red with lots of stainless trim. I believe that everything happens for the best and if I end up with two one tons then so be it. There's a reason for and down the road I'll be glad I didn't part with with it. By the way the word perfect doesn't have a "u" in it. Just kinda funny and ironic to misspell that word. No offense meant.

I can post pictures that would make your mouth water, the truck is that clean.

stainless rocker trim makes me spittin' mad, if that's what you mean by making my mouth water! :p

Okay "spittin mad" :-laf Doesn't take much to **** you off does it. My rig has stainless trim All around the bed and tailgate, to protect the bed from the campershell (that's included)++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++, it has stainless steel steps that run from behing the front wheels to just in front of the rear wheels. New custom front grill. Stainless steel wheel wheel "eyebrows". A bright red truck that isn't faded out because it isn't left in the sun except to be drivin. It spends cold winter nights and hot desert summer days inside an insulted garage. It's not a daily driver. Under the hood is Mr. Bob's hoses, new water pump, new aluminum radiator, new fan clutch, 60# exhaust springs, #6 fpp. Rebuilt turbo that's always cooled down to <300* before shut down. An $8000. custom built ATS automatic transmission that had it's last visit to the trans shop 3 months ago for an up graded valve body, less than a year on a 5 star torque converter and hardened input shaft. Trans shop said the clutch packs looked like they had just been put in. Gauges on the "A" pillar post. Trans and t-case oil changed every 15,000 miles, engine oil changed every 5,000 miles, gear oil changed every 50,000 miles. Geno's garage dash cover (NO CRACKS IN DASH) because it's not left in the sun all day. Interior that looks like it's never been sat in. Headlight switch mod that has lasted 5 years. All universal joints replaced with lubiable joints that is lubed every 5K miles. EGR front slotted front rotors, stainless steel brake lines, 5. 3 dot brake fluid, new rear shoes and GM wheel cylinders. Near new 235x85x16 tires that are rotated every 5,000 miles. Built for Canada so it has day time running lights AND NO EGR valve. But of course yours is better than this is, isn't it:-laf

I could also put the 4" exhaust and brake, the AFE stage III intake, three piece ATS exhaust manifold and Shwitzer 62/14 turbo back on it, but then it would be better than yours.

According to Kelly blue book the truck is listed at almost $13,000 in stock excellent shape. I feel that with all the other items added it's easily worth the extra $2000.
