After reviewing around 1,000 posts on 5 different forums, I have come up dry on how to manually activate the high idle function on a Manual, 2003, HO truck. The stock “sensor driven” high idle is there, but no on has found a way to make it come on when desired. (It works automatically when the temperature is cold enough. ) One person has designed and demonstrated how to do it on a Gen 2 truck, but not on a 2003.

The Gen 2 solution was to lie to the ECM. There was only a two wire sensor in the Gen Two 24 valve trucks, providing intake air temperature to the ECM. Moparman73 designed a fix involving two switches and a splice into the existing wiring (see following url:

Mopar1973Man's Cummins Site • View topic - High idle feature... ). Two different resistors were chosen, whose values told the ECM that it was below 32 degrees, or below 13 degrees. When the ECM sees 32 degrees, it activates a 1,000 rpm high idle (not adjustable). When the ECM sees below 13 degrees, it also shuts down 3 cylinders, which provides even more heat production. Moparman73’s fix allowed him to use an in-cab switch selecting the two additional resistors instead of the actual sensor, a second in-cab switch allowed him to select which of the two resistors was inserted into the circuit.

Unfortunately, the 2003 truck added a manifold absolute sensor (MAP) in the same widget attached to the intake air box. There are now 4 wires instead of two. One of the wires provides 5 volts to both sensors. There is also a common ground to the two sensors. That leaves two wires, one providing the temperature signal to the ECM, and the other providing the intake air temperature to the ECM.

I have metered the wires with an accurate ohm meter. Neither sensor resistance is anywhere near the values quoted by Moparman73, so the actual values have changed. With no comparisons, I would just be guessing which wires were the ones driving intake air temperature.

Intend to purchase an intake box sensor tomorrow, and then do some extensive testing to find out just which two wires I need to use to try and lie to the 2003 ECM. I can see no reason why the technique which worked on the Gen 2 truck will not also work on the 2003.

I intend to cross post this on the four most popular Cummins/Dodge forums. Anyone providing hard information on the subject will have his data cross posted to the other forums. I know that “someone” out there has the missing bits of knowledge to allow us to do this. I am determined to get it done.

All the best,

Bill S.

Here are the air temp sensors form the FSM. The only question is which one activates high idle, inlet air temp or intake air temp. Enjoy.

I hope you figure it out. I've been hopeing someone would so I can get my 03 high idle too. Sorry I'm no help but I'm all thumbs when it come to electronics.

I think I remember reading some where that the automatic high idle also reads coolant temp along with air temp, so we may need to fool both sensors.

I have a 2004 auto trans with a manual high idle on my truck made by a company in Canada.

I had the local dodge dealer Gene's Chrysler (907) 452-7117 in Fairbanks, Alaska install it.

The high idle has a rheostat knob mounted inside the cab that will adjust your high idle from stock RPM to 2,000 RPM. It is activated by a push button and deactivated by steping on the brake, which brings the idle back to stock. It is tied into my auto start so I can activate the high idle feature with the trunk release on the auto start. Those interested can contact the dealer above to purchase or for more info.

I don't believe the manufacturer in Canada will sell retail the high idle has to be purchased through a dealership. I paid $299. 00 installed and it has been working great for me the past 4 years. I highly recommend it for folks living in the colder climates, like myself.

Alright! Score one for "oilrunner" I tracked down what his dealer actually installed in his truck. It is a "made in Canada" product, and is just what the doctor ordered. See the following URL for information:

DSG FAST IDLE KIT 03-06 RAM

The quoted price is presently in the area of $450. 00 for the kit. They do sell direct.

I would rather have a cheaper do it yourself option, but believe that this is the "deluxe" solution (read the description of the product).

More later,

Bill S.

Not to be contrary at Christmas but I did a web search on BD HIGH IDLE. They LIST a box and connectors for the BD high idle kit in the DODGE RAM section and its the BD site. OK NEW scoop. Called BD. Boy that was EASY. They DID sell them and their still on their Web page. But due to NO inquires/sales they stopped buying them FROM the COMPANY IN CANADA! The Canada folks would not sell just a few to them at a time. So BD dropped it.

That is TOO funny. Want to bet which "company in Canada" they were getting them from?

I had called just called BD when I typed up my "BD does not sell them" post. The unhelpful young lady I spoke with did not volunteer that they had previously sold the kits.

Nope, been there and tried that. That thread only applies to 04. 5 and later trucks. (The jury is still out for 04 trucks. ) Thanks for the reference, but it will NOT work with the 2003 model.

Bill S.

The 04 trucks work the same as the later models. The idle up feature is included in the standard ECU flash. It just needs to be activated.

If you have a very late 03, and IF you can find a tech that knows what to look for it is rumored it can be made to work on some 03 models. :)
