I am getting ready to purchase an auxilary fuel tank for my truck.

Well my plan was to go with an L-shaped tank, but now I am thinking about in a couple years when we upgrade our Travel Trailer to a fifth wheel. The over the rail box will probably be in the way, especially if it gets moved back 10-12" to clear a tank.

Does the over the rail boxes get in the way when turning?

I am thinking of selling my Pro-tech box and getting one of these instead. I will however miss the pro-tech box as they seal very nice.

The tank set up you are looking at should be OK. I have to remove my over the rail box to accommodate sharp turning. Most boxes are 4"-6" above the rail. Extended pin fifth wheels will have the clearance needed to turn, but the larger ones with over hang in the front will hit the box.

I have the 100 gal. L shaped fuel tank with a tool box welded to it. If you know how high the tank is then add about 2-3in to that and thats how high my box is. I dropped my pin box down one set of holes to avoid any problems turning, so far so good never had any problems. Of course I do have a 2wd which helps a little being that it does not sit as high as a 4wd like yours.

Have you considered haveing a fab shop turn yours into a tool box / fuel cell combo? The protec in a lot harder for people to break into. Of coarse this depends on your currant clearance issues but if you have the space I'll bet they could easily do it for the 700 bucks you would spend at Northern. If I get a chance I want to put a floor, baffles, and fuel neck in an inbed tool box. Then I want the pump and hose mounted in the box. I guestamate I will have about 120 gals.

Never thought of that. The thing is my box is a over the rail box and if I get a fifth wheel I may have to get a different box anyways for clearance.

It's hard enough to get that distance above the rails, let alone the box isn't it?

My tool box sits on the floor of the bed and is the same height as the rail (not over the rail). You can get a combination tool box and fuel tank like that. A friend of mine in Alaska has one. They also make a V notch fuel tank that goes behind the receiver hitch at the tailgate with tailgate removed. Almost anything you want is now available.

I have a 75gallon L shaped tank with a shallow toolbox attached, works great. I have a headache rack on it that flares back 16" and rails on the bed that stick up 3-4"... but only 2wd. the box/fuel tank combo sits below the rails so never had a problem. bought mine from Tractor Supply.

only complaint is the toolbox doesnt hold much since it has to be shallow.

the bed rails stick up about the same as an over the rail box, and I have a few dents in the 5'er from the frame rails and turning out of our steep driveway but atleast I dont have any dents in the truck bed
