Sold the slide-in...uhhh-ohhh...

Well, just sold the slide-in on eBay last night. Guy is potentially coming from almost 400 miles out.



The part that has me worried is the fact he is planning to haul it in a 1500/short/extended silverado. Camper is 8 feet and around 1500#s. He has no tie-downs (keep in mind I had all this listed in the auction (camper weight, recommended truck requirements, no tiedowns, etc. )... not to mention there will be no room for the metals stands I made for it.



I stressed to him how much it weighs and that it might be heavy for a 1500... he replied that he's hauled more weight before without troubles. And I have no problem with that, he knows his truck better than I do. But I still have concerns that he would be grossly overloaded/balanced badly... he did mention that he did own a slide-in at one point, so at least he knows what he's getting into as far as the COG.



He may have me deliver it, which would probably be best since I'm set up for it anyway. He said he was going to talk with the wife to see if they want to come after it or if they want me to deliver it...

Collect CASH, hand over paperwork. Let HIM load it, let HIM tie it down. If you do it and it comes loose or he has a wreck you can be dragged into a mess.

I specified in the auction that I would assist with loading, but it was their responsibility to secure the load. I kinda had that in mind already... loading is one thing, securing is another.



I actually hope he wants me to deliver it... it will cost him more $$, but I think he was liking the idea. I will definitely take pictures (for my own sake).

When I was selling my 11'-3" Lance camper, I refused to sell it to a man with a 3/4 ton Ferd. I did sell it to a couple with an 02 Dodge 3500 DRW, 2WD from a craigslist ad. Their happier then two pigs in mud with it and use very often.

Although this probably means little, I talked to a coworker with the same truck.



He indicated that the payload in a 1500 (like this one) is 1900#s. He figures its inflated because you can get 6 people in the cab, plus gear. He said the main thing would probably be the COG control going down the road (sway), but figured the truck would be near its GVW.



He said the same thing as the other guy... had a bunch of weight in my truck. Well, that's cool, but I doubt you've had it 7 feet from the bed floor before either!



And Grizzly, you're talking about a slide-in HOUSE, I'm talking about a slide-in CLOSET!!

It's relative, heavier truck, bigger camper, lighter truck, smaller camper.

Screw that. No way that truck can haul that camper safely.



I would have him sign a bill of sale with a release of liability in case he rolls the thing over on the first turn (seen it happen). Take the bill of sale to the bank and have it notarized. Take lots of pictures before he leaves your driveway.

I did it once, poor folk have poor ways. With care and good sense, he can survive. Sure was a lot nicer to drive the one ton dually diesel with a 12ft slidin though!

Like I said, the guy mentioned he has owned a slide-in in the past... so at least he is aware of their COG issues. He decided to pick it up... he really doesn't seem concerned about it in the least...

One thing that, in retrospective, probably wasn't such a good thing... listing on eBay more/less locks you into the sale. I posted the auction that it would need a 3/4-ton truck, that it was 8-foot long, and that it weighed around 1500#s. I also put in that I would assist in loading, but the buyer was responsible for securing it. I do plan to take a picture... I'm also going to have him sign the eBay auction printout to indicate he read it (with all my descriptions) and received the camper.

Not much I can do at this point but make sure he's as safe as possible. As I already pointed out, his truck should be rated for 1900#s... and at least the GM trucks are RATED for a slide-in camper (which is more than I can say for my truck, that had a "no slide-in" disclaimer in the glovebox when new!).

Well, it just left 20 minutes ago.



Guy was prepared as well as he could be... only thing he didn't get was the stands I set the camper on, because he didn't have any more room.



Truck actually held it ok (it was a Z71, not just a standard truck)... not much room between the axle and bump stop, but at least they weren't touching with it just sitting there.



I explained that it was top heavy (as they always are) and he did put all four tiedowns on it... so it should ride ok. He was comfortable with it, told me he had owned one a while back and he was familiar with them...



So it is gone... and he was very happy with his purchase.

Congratulations on selling your camper Steved. It's like a load off your shoulders and sometimes some sadness seeing it go down the road. Now you can enjoy your 5er.

Thanks, it was about time to sell it. I put it on several sites, including TDR and Craiglist. Ended up selling it on eBay... had 56 watchers and only five bidders!

It was sorta hard to see it go... even though we had it only 3 years, I put a lot of work in it and it provided a lot of good memories. At least it sounds like the current owner is going to get some use out of it... which is the best thing I guess.

Time to get on the 5vr, get ready to go camping next weekend maybe... I did figure out why the furnace wasn't working!

Thats how I sold mine when nothing else would work. poor guy couldn't back up under it right, I hop in and bingo! I told him he would get better after a few bed scratches:-laf I did.
