Best campground @ Moab

Where is best campground @ Moab, UT?

We have stayed at several, all good! The Portal is very nice but all are fine. You can dry camp lots of places along the river also both ends of town, check it out. good stuff.

Canyonlands was ok... but we pulled in during the night, and left before sunrise...



It was quite cramped... I wouldn't have wanted to have been much bigger than what I was...

There are multiple campgrounds in the national parks, Canyonlands and Arches, each of which has various advantages, depending what you want to be near to. There's also a small but very nicely placed one in the state park at Dead Horse Point.

Kind of depends on what you want. If you want full hookups in/close to town is about your only choice. If you dont mind dry camping or maybe just water availalble not neccesarily a hook up you have a lot more choices. As mentioned east of town along hwy 128 and the river has a few. You can also find some spots on the south side of the river west of town. Arches National park the campground is at the very rear of the park 20ish miles from the entrance. Canyonlands NP Island in the Sky District and Dead Horse Point SP both have campgrounds. South of town in the Needles District of Canyonlands NAtional Park also has a decent campground very scenic but the parking spaces tend to be a bit small as mentioned by Steved and is about 35miles off the main hwy and 35 miles south of town. There is also a couple of campgrounds in the Canyon Rims Recreation Area south of town one is called Windwhistle which I really like and is only about 5 miles or so off HWY 191 and 30 miles south of town usually not many if any people there and farther back that same road is a multitude of places you can pull off.

I stayed at the one right next to Slickrock Campground. It's a long driveway on the southeast side of SR CG. It's not on that Utah campgrounds site but you can see it on the satellite view. I have nothing bad to say about it. It was in the fall and some of the other campgrounds were closed.

if you travel much get the trailerlife camp ground directory. its about the size of a large city phone book but very helpful. it lists all camp grounds in the US by city and state. it rates them by access, layout , facilitys and cleanliness. robert

Spanish Trail on the South end of town is pretty roomy and has nice facilities. It's a few miles out of town, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I lived in Moab from 63 to 73. Then, any of the surrounding BLM land was open for camping. I think it still is. If you like to dry camp there are probably still lots of choices, unique to anywhere in the states. It is truly a wonderfull area.

Moab has a good info center on the north edge of the town. Stop in for info.

I helped lay out the slick rock bike trail just East of Moab. In the 70's we thought it would be for dirt bikes and jeeps. Now the mountain bikes have taken over. But, still nice

We second Spanish Trail. Out of the "congestion" of the town but not too far away to just drive in. It is also closer to the Colorado River and there is a GREAT evening boat trip [Canyonlands by night I think it's called] that is not to be missed. Also just across from the golf course so it has a lot going for it. Diana

Anywhere in Moab is good . My wife and I always enjoy staying in Moab on our way to Oregon.
