I replaced 1 factory lift pump and never liked the pressures I saw, if I ran a wide open run or when I passed a truck when I was towing, I could pull the pressures down below 3 psi. I put a vulcan relocation kit on and that really helped the pressures, but a short time later I started to get fluctuating pressures and the pump was making a rattling noise like it was cavitating. I then put one of the campaign lift pumps with the vulcan relocation and it only put out 10 psi at idle and would drop to 5 psi when I jumped on it. I got frustrated with the cheap Carter vane type lift pumps and ordered an AirDog a couple years ago and haven't looked back. It gives me a solid 15 to 16 psi. at idle, 13 to 14 psi. towing my 5th wheel, and never drops below 12 psi. during a WFO run. I would suggest going to one of the after market systems like the Fass, Walbro/Glacier, or AirDog. Everyone seems to put these on and can forget about watching the fuel pressure gauge. Mike
 
I'm still a fan of the stock lift pump with big fuel lines. When I replaced it this last time I moved it down to the frame rail, so hopefully longevity will improve (that was my second replacement). My pressures are about 14 @ idle, 13. 2 @ cruise, and 9. 5 @ WOT (450+hp).



I like the ability to pick up a pump at any Dodge or Cummins dealer. My first one quit while I was on the road, and after a quick stop at a Freightliner dealership I was back on the road an hour later. A little luck played into that one, but if it had been an aftermarket setup I would have been stuck until parts arrived from wherever.



As far as price, I can still buy 2 more pumps for the price of one of the water separator/pump kits. That should take me well over 200k miles, which is a fair $/mile for me.



And as a bonus, I still have the factory fuel heater and WIF lights.
 
After my "new" stock lift pump lasted a total of 6 hours I decided I didn't want to deal with them any more. I had the vulcan relocation kit on the truck and it made changing the pump really easy but it didn't make want to have to do this again anytime soon. The thought of having to keep a supply of lift pumps in the truck "just in case" wasn't appealing.

I wanted something that would last a bit longer. I bought the FASS 95gph pump and haven't looked back. 16psi all the time, I have managed to pull it down to 14 psi once going up hills west of Durango pulling a 7000 lb car/trailer.

Do some research and see which one would work for you.

I did not go with a FASS, but DITTO to Mark's comments. I went through three oem pumps in the relocated position.
 
I use the stock L/P (second one) with the full vulcan kit, drawstraw and all. It maintains 13-14 psi all the time. Doesnt't matter wot or cruising even with a load it stays the same, I can't drop the pressures down at all. It was the same on the origonal L/P after I put on the Vulcan kit.


One very important thing is to have a W/S fuel filter before the lift pump. Especially if you use the stock pump cause I think it's built kinda cheap.
 
I had to replace my vp-44, so I decided to replace my lift with the fass 95 and also a gauge. Haven't finished yet but will let you know how it went. I bought the fass becouse it seems everyone likes the performance of it.
 
I went with fass. figured that i didn't want to take a chance on thefactor

y pump even relocating it. So far the pump reads at idle 17psi and with throttle 14-15psi. Hope my 44 lasts longer then 85000 next time. Yes I did run my tank down a few times,now I wont unless I have to. Baja can be far and few for fuel ups at times.

Just buy the fass or aftermarket pump. I put 3 lps in mine and if I had just done that to start with I would be ahead 100$. I just put the pump in with the lines kept stock water sep. With edge comp @full bore can't pull it below 13psi! good luck.
 
FASS lift pump

I have the oem lift pump on my 02. Vulcan relocation kit. Once again getting erratic fuel pressure so guess pump is going out, again. Third one 70,000. Truck is stock with automatic transmission. Will the fass pump without filter and water separator suffice or do I need the whole banana? I do very little towing. Thanks, Ken.

Just the FASS 95gph pump should work fine. It looks like you don't have any sort of power adding mods done to your truck, looking at your signature line, so this pump should fit the bill even if you do plan to tow.

I'm really happy with mine. Its nice not to have to carry a spare lift pump with me anymore.
 
It's not necessary to use the filter and separator with the FASS. I just have the pump as well as my friend and fellow TDR member isb360-Tim. The Cummins aren't as sensative to the air in the fuel as other brands. The FASS is great and most mild or moderated setups will use the 95 gallon per hour one. Even FASS cautions you to not get the 150 unless you're really puttin' out the hp. It's a great pump and if you leave out the filters, you can keep the cost down.
 
I to went with the FASS 95 pump only. After 5 lift pumps I said enough is enough. I idle at 15 & wide open with my RV it might pull down to 13. 5.
 
i've got the walbro that came with the gfs-392 kit from glacier diesel. 15. 5 PSI at idle, and 13 psi WOT. No problems with it at all. i would recommend it to anyone.
