Yes I know its a diesel and diesels knock. BUT my 06 sounds like an old gas burner from the 70's when I'm crusing down the highway under lite load. My wife keeps reminding me of it. The first times she said it I said yes Dear, its a diesel, now I'm beginning to wonder. It really sounds like the valves are floating. The truck has about 33K on it now.

Is that nomal for the new 24v engine? My old truck was a 12v and it did not do this.

You can try to go to the dealer. If you have a good dealer, they will properly diagnose it.

If you have "the usual" dealer, they'll respond either "cannot duplicate problem" or "it's a diesel - they all sound like that".

I had bad luck with my 06 motor. At 20k miles I developed a knocking noise. After much diagnosis, the #6 piston was burned. I had minor mods on my truck and the dealer wouldn't cover the problem.

I scince then found that this is not an uncommon problem for even stock trucks. It stems from a CP3 and fuel rail set-up that can starve the #6 cylinder. Have the tech scope the cylinders to be sure this is not the case.

I started getting a small tick on my '03 when ultra low sulfur fuel started arriving, I have been running Stanadyne additive and CA40G the engine runs very smooth ever since. The new ULS fuel is crap, it gells faster and has a lot less lubricity than low sulfur fuel. Maybe try that if the dealer has no answers, god forbid the dealer know anything!

Do you ever work the motor. I mean like towing a load etc? One of the biggest differances in engine noise and how it runs is after pulling several thousands of lbs at hiway speeds and egts kept up there. After that you'll go "darn it runs lots more smooth and lots less engine noise" Burms the carbon out of them. These are a WORK HARD motor and using them as a grocery getter is hard on them. Big differance in mine after pulling 10k a thousand miles!

I've worked it pretty hard. I've done 2 acrosscountry trips towing a lite load a4000 # camper. I just recentlytowed my 5th wheel about 10000# to and from the beach (down the mountain and back about 500 miles).
