Anyone out there have experience with the Rickson 19. 5 tires/wheels?

How is driveability in general and on curves and in snow?

Recommendations on tires?

Donald,

I got the Ricksons for two reasons: First, higher gearing and Second, greater load capacity.

As it turned out, the gearing was only about a 4% increase with no noticable increase in fuel mileage.

The greater load capacity gave me some peace of mind, but I am realizing that the factory wheels and tires are quite capable of carrying any reasonable load.

I got the Toyo M-608Z 245/70R19. 5 - Load Range G tires. They had adequate traction the entire time I had them, but they weren't that much better (if any better) than the factory mud and snow tires. Driveablity was fine.

I like the Ricksons, but if I had it to do over again I'd save my money and stick with the factory wheels.

My friend had a very bad experience with Rickson. They promised him wheels for his 02 Dually and it ended up taking about 3 months to get him the wheels after several broken promises.

Otherwise he's happy with them.

Thanks. I have scenarios where I have a max load in my bed and am right on the limit for the tires, single rear wheel, and the higher load range would give peace of mind. If someone made a higher load range tire in the 18", that would be fine. However, I have also had scenarios where the tire dealer couldn't get a new 18" tire for 3-4 days. With 19. 5" rims there are a lot more options for tires. The other option is to buy a small 2 axle trailer.

Rickson 19. 5 on my 97 over 140 thousand miles, and still have good rubber. Running General's 400's. Very Very Happy. Just ordered wheels and tires for my 2004. 5

My factory General 17's went 35K. I switched to Rickson's with Mich XDE M/S tires and they went 132K. No regrets about going to 19. 5's in general. I would go with the 6" rim cause it's easier to check pressure on the dually 6" than the 6. 75". The Mich's were 245's and they have been replaced with Sumitomo 225's that appear to be wearing just as well.

Are you thinkin' steel or aluminum?

I just replaced my Dually stockers with the new MKW 6. 75-19. 5 alloys and Kumho 265/70-19. 5 mud&snows. The MKW's are unique in that you can run 4 alloys on the back of your dually due to their design. The biggest bonus is that I paid $300 a wheel and that they arrived in a week! MKW LUXURY WHEELS

Toyo makes a Open Country MT 295/75R17 that is rated a 3980LBS. It will fit on the stock rim with no mods. If you want a aftermarket rim you will need a 2" spacer in the front. I am trying to find out the load rating of the stock rim so I can run this tire. I have a set of the Vision 19. 5 with the Hankook DH01. They whine and there is alot of tread wobbbbble when not loaded:eek:.

There are after market rims in 18" thet have a load limit of 3500lbs but you would have to run the TOYO 285/75R18 it has a load range of 4080lbs but you will need to lift the front with a space also.

I have had mine on for a little over two years and I am thrilled with the wheels and tires. I love the way they handle.

I am running Hankook DHO1's 265/70/19. 5

byrdseye... could you post the extact URL to the wheels, I can't find them, PLSSS!!! THX PJ

Mkw

I've called MKW and they gave me a couple "regional" distributors to call. I haven't been able to get a call-back from the distributors. MKW stated they wouldn't sell directly to me.

byrdseye: Where in NM did you get yours? I'm here in the Land of Enchantment too. Also, are the MKWs hub-centered, or lug centered? When MKW told me that they use aluminum on all four rears (dually), it makes me wonder how thick they are at the bolt circle. Do you have to replace the lug studs with longer studs? How thick are the wheels at the bolt circle face?

One final question: Running 265s on a dually seems large. How much clearance do you have between the rear tires? Got any pics?

Thanks!

Here's the link to the exact page with pictures!! MKW 19. 5" 22. 5" DUALLY WHEELS I purchased mine through their distributor in Arizona (Wheel Specialties or something like that... . ) and they were very easy to work with.
The rear wheels (hub centric) have at least 3" between them ... . they use their acorn lug nuts with a washer for retention and the wheels must be 1/2" thick. My only complaint so far is that they mounted them with straight valve stems which make it a PITA to check pressure! (I have some bent stems on the way) So far they seem to balance pretty good with the Equal beads and the truck handles better... ..... but rides a bit rougher with the stiff sidewalls. Hope this helps.

BYrdseye... THX for the link. . they look nice. How do you recal your speedo withthe tires being bigger in diameter. I have a Smarty JR that will do that for me.

How did the price compare with Rickson? Are you happy with the tires other than the stiffer wall? Is the ride smooth empty or do you have any balance issues? What do you carry load wise?

THX again for posting link.

YOU got any pics of your rig, that would be great to see them installed. Warm regards, PJ

I'll try to get some pics posted tomorrow... ... . I changed the tire size with my Smarty Jr. as well :) They are quite a bit less expensive than Rickson and they balance well with Equal pellets.
(I don't understand all of the hype about the $100 a tire Hunter road force balancing when your using a brand new CNC forged wheel )
I only carry a load of about 3500lbs in the bed with my slide in camper while pulling a small boat with my current rig. I had Rickson's on my previous truck (a quality product) which pulled and 18,000lb gooseneck and the tires never gave any problems in over 100k. hope this helps.....

I am running Hankook DHO1's 245/70/19. 5, and while I love the handling, I am disappointed with how fast the Hankooks are running out of tread. I confess to running 85 lbs of air in the tires. After 30,000 miles the tread is almost gone in the center of the tread. Not so on the outer edges. Partially my fault, I guess, but 85 lbs isn't that much of an increase. I'm a careful driver, although curvy mountain roads don't help either. With the exception of how long they last, I'm pleased. I plan to recap them soon.

I just received my 19. 5 tires for my dually and can't be happier!!! They run a tight ship down there. Heather is a sweetheart and kept me updated on delivery time and tracking numbers especially when a tire they found to be 'not perfectly round and up to their specs'. It took another 2 days to get a replacement tire which I wasn't upset about. Other companies probably would have tried shipping the out-of-round tire without saying anything. But they did the right thing and got a replacement!!! Also hooked me up on a spare tire!!!!!

I'll post pics and opinions on performace, wear and mpg once I get some miles on them. First impression during a 700 mile trip upstate is EXCELLENT!!! Oo.

Heather's a doll

Agree on Heather. (Marry me, Heather?) OK, just kidding, I'm already married. My fuel mileage didn't change significantly. The truck handling did change, and in a very positive way! Heather recommended staying with the 245's, which I did, and she also like the painted steel wheels, as opposed to aluminum wheels. I like the look too (she was right about that too!). However, I have NOT gotten the tremendous miles I was hoping for out of the Hankooks. Maybe it was because I'm running 85 lbs of air instead of the 65 lbs recommended by Heather. All I know is I won't get 100,000 miles out of 'em. I am pleased with the handling and plan to recap them when they're worn out.
