i have an 05 with a stick and south bend con fe . tst power max ,stacks

i'm looking for the best turbo for low lag driving in the 450 - 500 hp range.

a friend has a super phat 62 - 14 for sale , the price is right ,but i think it may be to big for my goal. i don't want to make the truck to slow to respond to the peddle . i'm planning on a fuel pump upgrade , but haven't decieded which one as of yet.

thanks for your time and advice

I don't think you'll have any driveability issues with the 62 and your HP goal. The HTT Super Stock 71 series w/ 14 housing is rated at the 475-575hp level. Your 3rd gen will spool it even faster than my 12v would.

The HTT 64/14 I'm running is rated at 525-600hp, and I'm quite a bit less than that (~400), but spools great. I do have 4. 10 gears, so my RPMs are higher.

I am running the Super B special with a TST and I stacked it with an EDGE pressure box set to #2 and it spools FAST, the Edge stack really increases turbo spool.

Check my sig

Im running a htt 62/14 the Smarty takes the lag out I tow every day in the 12k range I figure Im in the 450 to 500hp range Randy

I pull a 40' GN usually loaded heavy and various other "stuff" that works the truck hard. Last years MATS event I put down 490/890 where I usually have my boxes, then 551/1008 with the TST at 6x6, EZ on level 2. That was with the original injectors with 161k miles on them in 95* weather with a SPS 62/14. Put 3381 miles on the truck this week so far, 818 of them today with a set of DD2's that we put in yesterday. If the rail doesn't go dry I think I can hit 600/1100! ;)

This is the exact same question I'm asking myself. I put up a post to this effect reguarding Turbo Re-Source. Here's what I have gathered from my research:

If you want crazy spool/ drivability and are not going above 500hp, a standard (non-phat shaft, non-killer wheel) S300 type turbo will probably work well. 12cm housing will work better for spool, but a 14 will do better at top end and towing. The Smarty will help spool b/o the bottom end fueling. So for towing a 62/14 with a smarty maybe the ticket.

The 62/14 you have availble will probably do nicely, but will be a little slower than a 62/12 and/or one with a smaller shaft.

The Turbo RE-source product I mentioned in my other post, kinda throws a wrench in the works b/o they use BB turbos which spool even better. But this comes at a price.

I gained turbo whine, power and cooling Smarty level 3 the hottest temp Ive gotten is 1300 on I-70 going to denver 19k gvw 60mph (SS62/13 ran 1500 degrees)with out the Smarty it deffiently spools slower but with the Smarty set on 1 or higher there is no lag Randy

I basically have the same truck as you (see sig. for bombs). Anyway, the HTT turbo seems to work nicely for me. Maybe slightly slower spool then stock, but its not bad at all. If I flat-foot it I'll get some smoke until the boost comes on buts its not too bad. I'm running the beta tune for the Smarty and from what I have read the "normal" version is better w/regard to smoke. I haven't dyno'd since I put the latest beta version on, but the previous one (with only only level, supposedly equal to "7" on the latest one) almost got me to 450 hp. It definately runs MUCH cooler with the new turbo...

ok thanks , anyone else with expierences

or ideas??

I absolutely loved my SPS62, it was slightly slower spool up than stock, But it was a beautiful towing turbo, way better than stock.

Check the shaft play on your friends turbo, radial play is ok, as it's bearings float in oil, end to end(axial) play is bad, you should not be able to move the shaft, front to back at all.

If it is in good shape and a decent price, I would grab it.

For some reason(larger cast elbow) 04. 5 and up trucks, have less lag with the 62s than the 03/04 3rd gens. Jess

You won't regret the sps62 turbo. That's what I'm currently running and I made over 580hp on that turbo. Don't pass it up if the price is right.

the turbo was sent out to be gone through . so i trust it's near perfect condition .

$1200. seems like a fair price .

but i just don't want a turbo that i'll hate every time i drive the truck , no matter how cheap it is .

thanks for all the input .

I have lost count on how many owners wish they follow the advise to go with the 62/12. . for 450/500 hp towing and every day driver. .

Hey Meier and Coleman, what kind of fuel economy r u getting with that kinda HP while towing heavy, and while empty mixed city? Empty hwy? Thanks!

Mine's a daily driver and I love it. Helped the mileage on the freeway considerably... . stayed the same in stop & go. I would do it again. FWIW

As you can see in my sig I put the miles down I hand calulate every tank 10mpg avg towing at 70mph gvw 18k to 20k empty has gone down a little because its so damn fun to driveOo. I run the after market turbo/injector program on my Smarty just a puff of smoke when you jump on it. Randy
