I am trying to diagnose a clutch problem on my truck. Unfortunately it is 400 miles away right now. My Dad borrowed the truck after the auto in his truck gave out last week. The problem is that the clutch is not disengaging, therefore it is hard to shift and "kills" engine when it comes to a stop. The service manual does not mention any adjustments. Does anyone have any suggestions?

How many miles? I would venture a guess it needs a new clutch hydraulic set up. Where is it at now?
180,000 miles. The truck is in Grand Junction, CO. The problem seemed to appear over just a couple of days. Is that typical for the hydraulics?

deffiantly the hydraulics,

This happened to me in a Wallmart parking lot. Almost couldn't overcome the power of the cummins and barley got it stopped before hitting a car. The good news is that the hydraulic clutch system is a 1 pc enclosed system (slave, line, master) it is already full of fluid and ready to go. cost me around $130 and me and my father in law installed it in 20 minutes. Piece of cake

fyi mine let go at 104k miles

I'm a little slow at times since I quit working for a living several years ago. I think mine is in the early stages of going out, ~169k. Very difficult to get in gear at times. Hasn't ground yet but sometimes it moves the truck a little if I'm not on the brake. Any good online sources for this or pretty much only a trip to my friendly Dodge dealer?

Thanks

Thanks for the input. The new hydraulics didn't fix the problem, so I pulled the trany. There were no needles left in the pilot bearing and the disk was well worn(but not to the rivets). The presure plate "fingers" did not stick up as high as the new one, but that might be due to different brands. But 180K miles on a stock clutch isn't too bad.

Finger tip height.

The only valid comparison for finger tip height is with the cover bolted to the F/W with the new disc. They cannot be compared on the "bench". Must be bolted with disc.
