Who makes the best truck caps?

I am thinking of purchasing a cap for my Megacab with the short bed which I often find the bed alone is not big enough. I invested in a slide/roll type cover which i cannot fit 4 33" tires in the back of without it open.

it looks like an SUV style with clean lines. I am picky about the look. Is Leer a good brand or are there better quality brands that offer a style like this? also if anyone has a used to one sell that is preferred to be black in color send me an email to -- email address removed -- I am in MD.

I agree the Leer looks good but I owned one and believe me the quality sucks.

Had to replace the first one under warranty the roof sagged in about 6". Took a long time for them to admit that the top was bad. Rear door latch never worked correctly on the first one and never worked at all on the replacement. Sloppy craftsmanship. I have an A. R. E top now and I like it much better.

When I sold my '97 with the leer top the gell coat was cracked all over.

No more Leer tops for me. #@$%!

Never had a Leer, but have had two of the A. R. E. s. The first A. R. E. purchased in '04 is great, no problems at all. The second purchased last November does not have a good fit of the roof liner. The fit is OK but not as good as the '04. Some spots along the side rails are not stuck to the rails. Both roofs are very solid.

I've had a Snugtop on mine for about a year, and it is doing great.

The factory paint color match is also great.

I purchased an ARE for my 96 Tacoma years back. My brother now has the truck and the cap is still going strong. The shocks on the back window went... but that is a replacement/wear item on any top you get.



The paint on the sides towards the rear faded and doesn't look 100%, but structure wise its still 100%.



I went with a Retrax (RETRAX truck bed cover pickup bed cover tonneau cover roll top cover) sliding cover for my Dodge. Highly recommend this if you don't need the clearance. Probably not a good idea with a short bed as it consumes about 10" of the bed. Non-issue for me as I've got the long bed. It sits about 6" above the bed so you still have the full bed for about 6" before the cover that the it rolls into hits whatever you place on the bed floor (like 4 x 8 plywood).



If you check out their site they claim a 10% increase in mileage with their cover and a 10% DECREASE with a cap top. Whatever…

Retrax is what I have now I forgot the name of it. I like it but it limits the amount of dry lockable storage

it's sad that 4 33" tires would not fit in the bed covered. in my Suburban I had 5 37's and 5 39. 5's inside at the same time but a single bubble gum wrapper would have caused them not to fit

I did a lot of research here on the TDR before I bought my cap in '04. The main lesson I learned about the rear doors, is to avoid the slam type latches, especially if the rear door is all glass, as I have heard of glass breakage. I wound up buying Jeraco. I do believe A. R. E. was/is the best, but was too expensive. The jeraco was a good compromise and I would buy another. The hardware and fittings are good, and the shape is perfect, especially at the back of the cab/ front of the cap. Almost 4 years of rough rodas and usage and is holding up well. There's some surfers in my neighborhood who go all over Baja to the most remote spots in a 1982 Chevy 2500 4wd. Caravan Camper has been on since they bought it. It has a roof rack which accomodates their boards and sun canopy. Structurally and paint-wise it looks great.

Living in Northern Nevada, I see a lot of Caravan Camper tops. I think they deserve their reputation as one of the best camper tops out there. They are built to last and are heavy -- but that shouldn't be a problem for your truck.

Take a look at Century out of Indiana. I've had one on my 03 since new, and it is holding up well. They have a very strong roof rated for 500 Ibs there abouts.

I strap canoes and Kayaks to the roof racks and walk around up there to fuss with them with no issues of cracking gel coats, sagging etc.

I had the top Linexed when they did the box to give it grip so I wouldn't slip and fall off again when up there with wet shoes. I would buy another one if I was looking for another top. Price is middle of the road. Looks is okay as well as the fit. Everything still works, and no issues with the rear glass door breaking even in the cold we get up here.

A good functional cap.
