coolant capacity

Any other intake manifolds?

On a totally stock 05, Id like to know if a 5 Micron fuel filter would work or would I be better off using a 7 Micron?

Is one brand beter than another?

Thanks.

There can be an issue with smaller micron filters , more resistance , making it harder for the lift pump & less fuel to main pump .
Not sure but most of the stock fuel filters may be closer to 10 mc .
As for brands , my preference are Amsoil - Donaldson , Fleetguard - Cummins , Wix - Napa gold .
There some some more , but you should be able to find these .
Do not cheap out no name brands , there are some bad brands , Fram is one that many avoid .

So after reading a few threads on fuel filters and getting conflicting information I did some more research. . As it stands right now I can only find 2 fuel filters that meet current CR specs. Fleetguard (Cummins/Mopar) and Baldwin. Wix isnt close, Donaldson isnt close...

Current specs, based on TSB 14-007-06 5. 9 CR motors require a 7 micron absolute filter. While the TSB only talkes about MY06-07 I called several dealerships and asked for fuel filter PN's for older than 06 trucks, all come up with 68001914AA, the new 7 micron absolute filter. So the searching began...

The fleetguard FS18000E is absolute at 7 microns (96% efficient at 5 microns)but the gasket isnt ULSD compatible, so use FS19856 (same filter different gasket)... this is the OEM filter. Has a 14 gr dirt holding capacity

Baldwin PF7977 is nominal at 1-2 microns and absolute at 5 microns, has a 24gr dirt holding capacity.

Donaldson lists P550785 is absolute at 10 microns.

The WIX 33585XE is nominal at 7 microns. 33585 is nominal at 10 microns.

I am sure there are other filters being used but those are the big ones I know of.

Absolute is 98. 7% efficiency and nominal is 50% efficiency.

I have also read, but not verified, that Bosch specs a 5 micron filter for the CP3, and that GM uses a 2 micron filter.

I currently have the baldwin in my truck... I have read about zero issues with this filter and psi.

I called and talked with Donaldson and they had no clue that the specs had changed, and since the sell the Fleetguard filter with there name on it I would expect to see them carry the newer filter soon. The same is with Amsoil, they had no clue about the change, and were actually specking WIX filters, which appear to be the worst of the bunch... that should be changing.

Thanks John for the info.

From the way it looks, Im going to go with either Fleetgard or Baldwin.

Another qiuck question being that Im fairly new to diesels, what should the max mileage be before changing the fuel filter?

All help is appreciated.

I just installed the GDP 2 micron Big line kit. The BIG LINES off se the flow restrictions and I run a Baldwin 5 micron in the stock housing and a 2 micron Fleetguard spin on at the same time. All stock lift pump etc. If you stay stock, it will run the system easily. 2 micron filtration will really help your injectors. I had one go out with 19,000 on the clock with new 5 micron fuel filters every 4,000 miles.

I also run the Baldwin PF7977 and have been since the first filter change at around 8000 miles. I was pretty confident with this until two injectors went out at 16,000 miles and an injector pump last month at 20500 miles. I have considered the 2 micron kit. What do most dealers think about them?

The dealer that replaced my injector said GO FOR IT!!!! Fir a dealer to deny a warranty claim, they have to PROVE that the after market accessories CAUSED the problem. If you have an injector go out, etc in the future, how is a dealer going to say that BETTER FILTRATION caused your injector to go out. Since I use a CUMMINS/Fleetguard spin on, it cannot be denied! Same goes with Bypass oil filters etc. Engines don't fail on WORSE oil filtration. Hope that helps... . Takes about half hour to do the GDP ad on kit.

Just use a Mopar filter and you don't need to worry about warranty issues. I've used Mopar oil, air, and fuel filters for many years and have never had an issue with one.
