I mean I have a buddy that goes through $400/week for his landscape business... and I use maybe $10/week - how come we have to pay ROAD TAX on fuel that has no ROAD use???? I mean is there a way to write off this tax... not for a business but an individual????

I've sent this to my wife. She works for a sand and gravel company that uses off-road fuel at their pits. We'll she what she finds out. I suspect one of the reasons they may not have off-road fuel is because most off-road machines are diesel. For the little bit of off-road use of gasoline, they probably just have to file a form to get a credit back, but I'm just guessing.

private diesel owners should not be lumped into the same category as big company commercial truckers who can paas the cost on via procducts. this also applies to retirees on fixed incomes

If he keeps track of how much fuel he used for his machines, he should be able to write it off.

In fact when I had my big rig, I wrote off ALL of my fuel... ... if he's in his own business he should be too. ALL OF IT!

I used to pay my road use tax quarterly direct to the state(s).

We bought fuel stickers from each state we'd be traveling in. And OH LORDY you'd be up shytes creek if you was caught in a state w/o their sticker.

I'm glad I dont have to go through that with my PU truck.

When I fill up my boat at the marina.....

I can get a rebate back at the end of the year for the TAXES on the fuel - why in the heck it's on there in the 1t place is anybody's guess - probably like coupons - charge everyone and they all won't ask for it back... . HOWEVER I wonder how much gasoline is purchased for NON ROAD use daily throughout the US that SHOULDN't Have any ROAD TAX on it???? I'll bet it's a huge number... ... .

I burned about $200 worth of gasoline in my John Deere 345 lawn tractor last summer mowing grass. In my case, I figure it's not worth the hassle fo file for a state fuel tax refund of less than $5. If I ever replace the JD, it will be with a diesel powered lawn mower and I'll use my off road red diesel fuel in it.

Keep in mind that a credit for the taxes paid is better than a deduction (write-off). A deduction only returns the taxes you paid on the taxes. A credit returns all of the money paid on the taxes. If this doesn't make sense, then you definitely need an accountant.

This is a good question. When I fill my quad, mower, snow thrower, chain saw, etc. I'm paying road tax. I'm pretty sure the only time my chain saw would be on the road is if I leave the tailgate down. :-laf I probably don't use enough to get too worried about it, but what about guys who run quads on ranches every day and go through hundreds of gallons per year? You're paying 1/2 dollar at least in taxes on that gallon.

point, why isnt there a red dye gas??? i work for a equipment rental company that has alot of gas equipment as well as diesel that never see's the road, so why should the road tax be applicable?? like the other guy's said with my lawn mower, quad and go-cart they should be excluded as well. . the next time i need to run down to the store i think i'm gonna take my quad and when the cop ask's me what do i think i'm doing i will tell him hey i got road taxed gas in here and i'm gonna get my road use out of it:-laf

I'm guessing that if a business buys a large quantity of gasoline for off-road use, it would buy that fuel in bulk and it would be sold as farm use etc.

A farm is a business..... and so is a ranch etc. etc.

Maybe they were afraid that someone would get confused and put red dye gasoline into an off-road diesel engine? Then stand around and say "huh I wonder why that thing don't run. " and then sue because they're stupid?;)

One of the guys I worked for hauling manure just bought diesel at the truckstop. Had 100 gallon transfer tank. They had him fill out a tax-exempt form since it was being used in a farm tractor.

OH used to require the sticker for more than two axles on the road. I still have some old tax stickers on my toolbox.

I dont know that anyone has been sued over it, but that happens ALOT. Landscapers and such who use fuel cans to fill equimpent seem to be the worst. Its always funny for me, even better when the foreman or boss gets super irate #@$%! #@$%! and reams the crew. :-laf

Where I live here in Indiana we have CO-OP's. The one if Greenfield, IN has off road gas. My Dad lives close to it so I always grab my fuel jugs and fill them for the ATV, mower, blower etc. I am not giving the government anymore money than I have too. -Jason
