I was wondering if a radiator out of a 2002 ctd with a manaul transmission will fit in my 1997 ctd. I see that the 2002 has 2 very wide rows where the 1997 has 3 smaller rows. my 1997 has an auto transmission and the engine has been running warm. I have change changed the T-stat all the hoses and have been looking at all the build up in the core. What are my after market choices? thanks DEAN

Has the fan clutch been replaced or have you ever pulled the radiator to see if it is gunked up with crap in the fins?? Greasy residue and the like?

I got mine from NAPA. Make sure they get the right one. The first one they got was for a gasser 5. 9, even though the book said diesel. They found me a cheaper one, that was almost 1/2 what the gasser rad was.

I will almost gaurentee that it is oil residue on the bottem 1/2 of the radiator. That truck should not run hot---hence no need to change to a differant radiator. You will have to pull it out to see the junk/oil/dirt. Trust me ---pul it out and pressure wash the radiator and it will run normal again.

I have never changed it but it looks OK. How much did that new radiator cost you?

This radiator was in my buddy's 2001 and was causing him to run hot. From the top of looking down it wasn't noticeable and from the front you couldn't see it through the condenser. Once we pulled it out we couldn't believe what we saw. I would definitely take the time to pull and clean your rad first, before spending any $$$ on a new one. You will have to pull the old one anyway.

Oil Coated Radiator not a 12V issue...

12V (pre-98. 5) have the vngine vent tube back by the starter. No oil gets to the radiator like you see in 24V trucks. My 96 was not cooling so well. Was all set to replace with new. Had a radiator shop check it out. A steam and pressure cleaning had it good as new. Unless the radiator is damaged, they are a HD unit that has a long service life.
