RWHP to engine HP ?

4 strokes do run backwards.

Those are cool their is a few Coast Guard ships that have those but in a much larger scale. Now any Captain can moor those big recreational boats. I'm a big fan of the Direct Drive type of boats, little to no maintains.

GOLLY - wonder why they went with an inline, long stroke diesel engine, rather than, say, a V8 - like the Ford Navistar (cough, lousy reliability record... ) or maybe that dandy Dura-whatever (cough, cough - aluminum heads in SEA water?)...

I mean, other than lots of lugging, low speed reliability and economy, combined with long efficient engine life, what does Cummins offer that the competition doesn't? :-laf:-laf:-laf

There are some pretty incredible systems out there now for maneuvering boats. The most impressive ones are the centroidal drives employed in some specialized docking tugs. By using a bunch of controllable pitch veins mounted vertically in a circle, you can direct the thrust in whatever direction you want. Z drives have become pretty common now and they basically allow you to pivot the prop 360 degrees.

As far as smaller systems like this, I know that volvo has one too. I don't really work with pleasure boats so I don't know much about them.
