How do you do the tone ring mod. I pull all the time and think this would help me out. I currently have 173,000 on her. I have heard alot about the tone ring but no one has said how to do it. Do you think it would help?

Thanks,

Scott

it is really easy, Put the truck in 5th gear with the park brake on to keep the crank from turning. Take the serpentine belt loose. Then use a 15 mm socket and remove the 4 bolts that hold the harmonic balancer to the front of the crank, the tone ring is then removable. take the ring and grind the hole that the guide pin sits in. enlarge it on the left side with the dish facing you, you only need to take off about 1/16". then put it all back together making sure that you turn the tone ring clockwise if you are facing the front of the engine. You should see better mileage, I believe I did but if there is a rattle, you should back it off. Mine did and I backed it off about half way, it still rattles a little but I am willing to live with it.

IMO opinion I wouldn't do it on your truck.

I say this because I first did it on my 05 and results were worth doing it, a little crisper seems and no additional noise + some added mpg.

I then did it on my sons 03 and only noticed more noise / rattle, especially when cold on take off. Also longer crank times was obvious.

Its always done that, the rattle not the long crank times (truck use to be mine) but with the mod it was noticeably more loud.

On the road when under way all else seemed ok. The longer crank times were annoying and the rattle just didn't sound right especially when cold so I moved it back. I had done 3 degrees so figured if it didn't like that then nothing would be gained by splitting numbers.

I noticed on the engine sticker, the NOx for the 05 is listed at 2. 5 while the 03 is 3. 0

I think the 05's timing is retarded more to get that . 5 lower.

I increased the 05 by 3 degrees and it wouldn't surprise me if that brought the timing closer to what the 03's is from the factory.

well here's what I'm doing , have the Smarty Jr. they won't tell me what the timing advance is and Rokktech. I'm assuming I have 4 degrees. I get no rattle at all in the morning. So I would like to advance it another 2 degrees . How do I do the tone ring if I have an automatic?

If you already have all that, you would not gain any more mpg. It's called "diminishing returns".

The first degree gives you the most, the second less, and so on.

Besides, it sets a code around 3 degrees, because it gets out of sync with the cam sensor. Now you could take the Rokktech and put it on the camshaft, with silicone sealant to keep the oil in. The rokktech on the cam would let you advance the crankshaft an extra 3-4 degrees (one degree of cam is 2 of crankshaft), and so you could advance it to 6 degrees without a code, but it would be too much at idle, in cold weather. ( you need to advance both the crank and cam, not just the cam, don't get me wrong, so I am assuming you would use the tone ring mod on the crank).

The reason for no rattle w/Smarty is probably because they don't start advancing until it warms up.

You already have a 2wd, so I'm assuming you're getting about 23-24 mpg? Free wheeling hubs (for a 4x4), and a bedcover are the other two mods that would each give about 1 mpg. And get rid of the bugshield if you have one.

Thanks for your input . I wish I was getting 23-24 , I've been averaging 16-17 . Can't get much info from Bob Wagner on timing advance so maybe smarty jr. is only 1 or 2. Do like the idea of the the cam sensor. maybe just buy another Rokktech. I assume it's the same sensor as the crank sensor?

Well, you don't really need another one, there isn't one that would move that many degrees, but you will need to advance the tone wheel to 5-7 degrees, The cam turns the opposite way, so the cam sensor would need to be rotated all the way down, and use blue silicone to keep oil from leaking out. Don't use the o-ring, it would defeat the purpose.

I still think that it would be too much when cold, but you're in Cali...

Betterthanstock thanks for your input . I think I will try a tank of fuel with the Jr. and the rokktech . I will update you in a week or so.

Guess It's been more than a couple weeks. No difference in fuel mileage with the rokktech in place. Oh well
