I have a 04. 5 ctd and was wondering what everyone thinks the best sounding muffler or glasspack is. My exhaust now is straight piped and is a little loud. I've searched the forums but there really isnt anything about mufflers with the cat removed. Any replies will be helpful

Ditto - I replaced my entire exhaust one afternoon with the MBRP stainless 4" pipe & free-flow muffler before my truck had 50 miles on it (while the work was still easy to do). Not too loud, and not too quiet - sounds excellent at any engine load, from idle on up.

Try a dynomax muffler. Its a lot cheaper than the MBRP and it takes away the raspy sound when you really step on it. My old MBRP had that sound and I didn't like it.

I like Magnaflow smooth and mellow, compared to silverline that sounds raspy to me. I just put a Magnaflow on a buddies truck and I like it more than my current Silverline setup (2x24" + aero turbine) I will be going to two 36" Magnaflows. I like a good sounding quiet.

I have a 5" Magnaflow system and love it! The truck has a rumble at idle, when you put your foot in it ,very deep sounding . When I am up to speed no drone and quiet.

every muffler mentioned in this thread is a packed muffler... while effective at muffling, they are also very effective at removing the sound of the turbine from the exhaust note. as such, I will never run a packed muffler on a turbo vehicle

What exhaust system that isn't packed would you recommend? I'm also looking at replacing my exhaust system. I want one that gets rid of the drone at cruising highway speeds, flows well for power and economy, and has just enough growl to it when I get on the throttle.

My vote on the best sounding muffler is the Walker Muffler which you can buy at Napa for $89 ( # 21471). Its a straight through 4 inch muffler that has no packing. Note: I dont have CAT with my set-up ..... as I am currently using the test pipe ... ..... again strictly for testing only. The muffler has a real nice tone while idling and then will wake up when you hammer down on it. I am also impressed with the turbo sound I am getting with this muffler. I have used this muffler on my previous Dodge trucks and can tell you my 1999 truck sounded the best but I am pleased with the sound of the 06!!! Based upon the price I would at least try it out. Let me know what you decide.

Is this one a direct bolt on??

I took a chance on a 5" to 4" dual kit from Expandit. Has a chambered 5" inlet and dual 4" outlet, and it is the best investment I have in my truck. I love the sound, nice mild rumble at idle, cant really hear it at cruising speeds, but when you put your foot in it it sounds amazing. No drone whatsoever. Bought the kit off ebay for about 350, spent about 60 bucks on tips. Very easy install. My only problem with it is the way the pipes come over the axle... it works and does not come close to rubbing anything, but the way the bend is on the passenger side compared to the smooth straight pipe for the passenger side looks goofy... to me at least

Another guy in town has a 5" single Expandit kit on his 06, and it sounds somewhat the same, but he has a little bit of drone. I believe he ended up choking his down to a 4" muffler and it got rid of the drone.

I have the 5" turbo back MBRP and love it, yes it is loud and you cany hear the turbo through the exhaust (but i have no problem hearing it through the intake) and I guess some may say when you are running it hard it sounds raspy, I say it sounds mean! I also love setting off car alarms as O drive by :-laf
