Using old engine oil in the fuel tank

I know a lot of you guys "recycle" your oil after oil changes through the fuel tank.

How much do you use at at time? Is 1/2 gal per tank too much?

What are the benefits as far as injectors and fuel pumps go?

One last question... does it make a difference if the used oil came out of a gas engine instead of a diesel?

We are working in the middle of nowhere and no place here takes used oil after oil changes. I am looking for a convenient means of disposal for my CTD oil and the wife's Tundra oil.

I don't really know the answer to this but I bet some guys will chime in and say that you can do it on the older 12 and 24 valve engines but not a good idea on a HPCR. Are you filtering it first?

without some good filtration (2micron) I would not do it in a 3rd gen. those injectors are $2300 to replace.

Thanks guys. I wondered about filtration. I'll probably just hang on to it until I get somewhere that takes it. Unless anyone has a good, easy idea about filtering?

Use some tall glass jars and let it sit for a few weeks, then only pump out the clear stuff on top, assuming that it ever clears. Detergent oil takes forever to settle.



Otherwise, search for toilet paper filter, also known as the Franz filter.

I would look at northern tool for a pump... the frantz filters would probably give better filtration and cheaper filter elements.



There is no benefit to running WMO... it adds no lubrication. You are simply gaining a few gallons of "fuel".



As previously noted, most will tell you not to do it.

I worked on the North slope of Alaska in the oilfield, that is very remote and no place to dispose of any used oil. .

Our truck mechanic set up a Racor filter system(4 filters) on a hand truck, wheeled it to the truck, sucked the engine oil out thru the filters and into the fuel tank. That was 10 yrs. ago and they are still doing it w/o problem.

JACK Do you know what type of filters that was being used to do this??What was the micron that was being used or was there 4 different micron filters?? I thank that by using the 4 would be the best way. This would let the oil move throw faster. ------BEN

A friend of mine has a '04. Been runnin WMO in for 80,000 some miles with never a problem. Truck is equipped with a fass system and a fleetguard fs1000 filter. Which is a 10 micron filter. 3 - 5 gallon per tankfull. Doesn't seem to make a difference in how it runs.

I will definately investigate this further. So we need a 2 micron filter setup... ... . so much for my idea about pouring it through cheesecloth and my wife's used nylons :-laf

I was running up to 2 qts of WO per 20 gal. in my 96. If I was not running it hard she put up an ugly smoke. I pulled the injectors and they looked like nasty little volcanoes--coked up pretty bad. I had a 30 gallon plastic barrel that was 1/2 full or better and would draw the oil off the top after it sat undisturbed for a month or more. It was all my oil from gas and diesel engines and I was VERY meticlous about clean in the whole process. I had about 100K on it when I pulled the injectors. I don't know what is normal coking for that kind of miles. With the new ULSD and fuel cost I am thinking about running WO again at say a QT per 20 gal ratio.

I've been running all my old oil through my 98 12 valve. It's a multi fuel engine... why not?

I'm VERY perticular on how I keep all containers and the drain tub clean that I use for oil going to the cummins.

I also let it sit for a few weeks (if possible in the sun) then strain it as it goes in my tank.

I dont run too much through the same tank. A gallon or two per tank is plenty.

I havent noticed much a difference in my fuel filters. Theyre a little darker colored than usuial.

I can only detect more smoke if I'm really getting on it.
