My brother bought a used 06 dodge cummins truck out of state. What will he need to do here to register it ? visual on smog equip? First hand experience would be nice. Thanks in advance

It must have 7500+ miles on it if it is not Ca certified. He needs to weigh it at a public scale(in San Diego there's a scale at Mayflower on Miramar Rd. ) Be sure and empty the tank to fumes and remove the spare and any equipment you can. Fees are based on weight. Next go to nearest DMV at 7:30 AM and wait in line. Show all paperwork to the clerk. They'll send you to inspection and certify the vin plate. Next comes the painful part: registration fee,transfer and 7. 75% tax in San Diego(more in some cities). He should be out of there in 45 minutes with new plates issued immediately. No smog required yet. (Arnold's working on it) Good luck.

If you are near escondido I think there is still a public scale at Grangetos off Mission. A little loophole... if you wait a year to register there is no tax just gets a little hairy driving for a year with no tags
Have done it 4 times on trucks (used to only be 90days but they changed it to a year), twice on trailers... havent paid tax yet (on vehicle) and moved out of CA quick as a can be.
Just keep in mind it is the DMV, so luck of the draw, I had tinted windows and straight pipe on my '99 when I registered it... so I had the windows down and motor off.

That's a good suggestion. AAA can register it because it's a private party sale. You still must bring a weight certificate available at a public scale at a cost of $10. 00. I'm with AAA but they couldn't do it do to the fact I had bought the truck from Dave Smith in Idaho.
