Bed Problem

To tailgate, or not to tailgate?

Can anyone give me some insite as to how I was able to put 35. 6 gal of fuel into my 34 gallon tank this morning? I've heard of running on fumes, but not running on negative! #@$%!

Well, you were probably ripped off a bit. The pumps you use are typically required to be calibrated every year or every other year. However, with the recent spike in fuel prices, the backlog has become incredible. I would report the pump to the state. If you have a receipt, it would be even better. They will move that fuel station to the front of the line for calibration checks and may fine them if they are out of compliance.

All pumps have a stamp on the outside telling when the last calibration was performed.

Can't provide any insight, but have put 35. 1 gallons into a 35 gallon tank (discovered the fuel gauge was no longer working) and the truck was still running... there is also the fill neck might account for some.

Yes the tanks seem to stretch. I have put 39 gal. in my 35 gal tank. I have done this 3 times. I have a 100 gal tank in bed . So I have pushed my luck when I did not have a trailer on -----BEN

I believe the 34 gallon figure dont take into account for 10% expansion volume.

Yea, you might be getting ripped off, but I could always get more than 34 gallons into my tank if I ran it over 100 miles on empty. :-laf

My bulk tank at home sits in a place so that my truck sits with the front left up higher than the rest. I put 40 gal. into my '04 w/35gal tank many times.

Our fuel tanks do expand and you can get more into them the rated capacity. What I do is when the fuel pump clicks, I'll squeeze in one more gallon just to be consistent.

Grizz, if you fill up at a different ststion, the pumps are not set for the same cutoff.

Even if youre at the same station, the level that's in the underground tank will determine when the pump shuts off. Or at a different pump the truck may be at a slightly different angle etc. etc.

I've always trickled it in until I can see the fuel. To me that's the most consistant.

That is how I fill my tank too... and some times there is only another 1. 5 gals after click off... other times there is almost 4 gals after.

I've done that too, but it takes a long time for the foam to go away. That is no doubt the most consistent way.
